rushing as a transfer at Vanderbilt?

Hi! I am transferring to Vanderbilt as a junior in the fall. I know it is hard to get a bid as a junior in most southern school but is it impossible at Vanderbilt? I do not know anybody at Vanderbilt so I hoping becoming involved in greek life would give me a way to meet people. I will also be there for 3 years because a lot of my credits are not transferring. I am also wondering if they will look down upon the fact that I am from the north? Any advice would be helpful.

It is difficult to get a bid as a Junior at Vanderbilt. If you are technically a sophomore, that will be better, but still very challenging. However, recruitment is deferred, so you have a semester to get to know sorority women. Recruitment is very "southern" there (frills, tough cuts, etc.), but being from the north will not hinder you at all.

My advice is to have an amazing gpa and glowing recs, then befriend a ton of sorority women when you arrive. There are also a lot of other things to be involved with if that doesn't work out. Good luck!

It is important to emphasize that you will be attending college at Vanderbilt for 3 years. If you go through recruitment and have listed on your application that you are a junior in status, they will think you have 2 years left of school. Get recommendations to each of the sororities there and make friends with sorority women but don't go overboard. Contact their Greek life office if you have any particular questions about Greek life on campus or about recruitment. If you contact their Greek life office, ask about fall informal recruitment, that may be easier than spring formal recruitment for an upperclassman. Good luck and if you do decide to post your recruitment story, use code names instead of the sorority names and do not disclose any personal information.

Recs come from women who are alumnae of the specific sororities. Sometimes members who are still in college can write a rec for someone going to another college, but this isn't true of all sororities.

Ask around and see if any of your friends that are a couple of years older, any of your parents' friends, teachers etc were in a sorority & can write a rec for you - you might be surprised!

If you keep coming up empty, go here

http://www.npcwomen.org/alumnae-panh...directory.aspx

and click on the city nearest to you. They can help you get in touch with sorority alumnae to obtain recs.

Good luck!
