Starting A New Chapter-Kappa Kappa Psi

I am currently a senior in high school. I am going into college next year as a music education major. The college I am attending is 10 minutes from my house. In my band in high school I was one of the "start players." I have a lot of pride in the music activities im involved in, & it's not unusual for me to spend 2-3 days after school helping out around the band room at my school. The college I will be attending next year has many greek chapters...but no music related chapters. Kappa Kappa Psi is the national music service frat, & being able to be in a greek organization, and serving the college music program would be a dream come true...and the idea hit me...

All chapters have to start somewhere...right?

but I have some questions...

from what I understand...which isnt a lot...there has to be a house where you live with your brothers or sister right? Do you as the founding member purchase the house...or do you plan fundraisers to start your chapter...or is the media's portray of greek life on the show greek inaccurate?...or if there is any other information on this question please give your input.

Also...if anyone has ever started a chapter at their college/university...please give me any information...advice....anything.

& any info you can give me on greek life would be awesome too

Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never heard of a Kappa Kappa Psi chapter with a house.

My advice:

1) Put this idea on the shelf until you've got at least one semester of college under your belt. You'll have enough to deal with starting college without trying to start a new chapter at the same time. Plus, you'll want to get a feel for the campus environment. Maybe the reason there is no Kappa Kappa Psi chapter at that school is because the school doesn't want one or there aren't enough students interested in being part of it.

2) If after you get to school, have adjusted to college and have gotten more familiar with the college as a whole (including checking out other chapters or organizations you might rather be involved in), you still want to start a chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, you'll need to talk with the proper people in your school administration and with Kappa Kappa Psi's HQ. (You can find some info from them on what's involved in starting a chapter here.)

Beyond that, if you do a little searching, you'll find lots of threads here on starting chapters.

As for Greek, it is partly accurate, partly inaccurate, totally entertainment (and not something to form opinions of the real world by). But bear in mind that it and most other movies and TV shows portray social fraternities and sororities, which Kappa Kappa Psi, a great organization, is not.

Thank you very much for that input Mystic Cat.

I agree about waiting until after the first semester. I have done research on who to talk to about my idea...& I would rather not be in a fraternity like in greek since I don't drink and the college im going to isnt exactly a greek party college. It's more of an entire student body college. It's a really great campus and they have activities every night.

But from what you told me and what I took it as...is that you do not need to have a house to have a chapter...It's more the aspect of what you do...not that you live together right?

Like I said, none of the Kappa Kappa Psi chapters I've been familiar with have had houses.

Please have an open mind when you get to college and realize that not all social organizations promote drinking and partying. Personally, I think that you have been watching entirely too much television and are assuming that fiction is reality. If you really have been doing your homework and know a lot about your future campus, you have probably already found lots of great groups to join.

there are probably chapters of every national panhellenic sorority and interfraternity council and nic fraternity that do not currently have houses, suites, lodges or appointed meeting rooms, and never will have, due to the administration of the college where they are located, land availability or other restrictions.

you have gotten some great advice from the posters above. good luck with the remainder of your senior year!

regarding Kappa Kappa Psi (and/or Tau Beta Sigma), colonization takes place at the request of the Director of Bands.

So go audition, join some ensembles, and have a good time in college. After having a good start in college (grades, etc) discuss it with your DOB. Should s/he see a need for Kappa Kappa Psi and/or Tau Beta Sigma on this campus, things can progress from there.

Good luck.
