This is where the Councils differ. It is nothing to see an active 96 year old member of a NPHC org still wearing letters, and is just as involved as a grad (alumnae member) as they were in undergrad.

In NPHC we are taught that membership is continuous over your life time.

In reference to When Dove's Cry's confusion - I think some people look at membership in terms of being financial.
financial = member
not financial = not a member

A lot of greeks are financial as undergrads, but may not be as a grad member due to new life expectations - family, home, cars, bills, paying off school loans. All of that seems to take precedent to greek org dues.
I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I am not at all saying that you shouldn't be active as an alum, but that it is different. There are just as many ways to be active as an alum as there are when a member is a collegian, but they are not the same ways, generally speaking. I absolutely did not say that alums shouldn't wear letters, and I have always personally been taught from day one my membership is lifelong.

Yes, this is what I mean. Thanks.

I don't know of any GLO that teaches anything different. As has been said many times, the difference is not in whether membership is for life. The difference is in what expectations and norms there are for members at different stages of life.

Okay then, maybe you need to elaborate or give some specific examples.

What I am saying is that what may be considered "different" for NPC may not be so for NPHC.

knight shadow's example was one. So is, like I said, alums showing up to collegiate events and acting as though they are actives. I am a member of my organization, but the chapter I belonged to is now the responsibility of the actives, and I feel that I should respect that. It's THEIR turn to be collegians...I had mine. Now I get to contribute as an alum. I understand you're saying it's different and I'm sure you're right, but I was clarifying that you misunderstood me in that I am in no way saying alums shouldn't wear letters or be active.

What is "appropriate" for alums to do varies widely from group to group, campus to campus and region to region.
