Post Question for Black sorority members.

I would like to make sure that I understand this correctly. After a the sorority that you wanted places a bid on you does that mean that you are in the sorority? or does that mean that you havent made it yet but you have been picked for a "line". I have done searches but they dont exactly answer the question that I am asking. Could somebody help?????? Could you explain what happens after a bid? If needed could you email it to me at Candlelight2000@webtv.net

We don't do things the way you're referring to. We don't hunt down potential members, ladies seek us out. They show us that they are interested in us. We don't do "bids". We don't take part of a Universities regular "Rush". We have an informational, tea, cat chat, whatever the organization decides to call it. If it is called a Rush, it is not the typical rush like you may be thinking of in a NPC or IFC organization. People who attend turn in the required materials and are contacted afterwards.

Please see the rush forum announcements in the rush forum for information about the intake process for NPHC sororities.

In TKE We do that too, we have informational meetings midway throgh the year, this usually nets us 4 more pledges. That is very helpful in making our chapter one of the best TKE chapters in the nation, but we also do Formal rush and Informal rush throughout the year.......And I always noticed the Traditionalyy black fraternities and sororities always had lower #s, which made it harder for them to compete against the traditionally white ones...So I asked a friend WHY? And she told me it was because yall need to have a 3.5 GPA to pledge..Is that true, If so why dont yall recruit more, because the BGLOs always seem to be absent at all the school orientations, and often we pick up some black men for our fraternity cause they feel they are not recruited to be in other traditionally black fraternities.....

Very simply, the Divine Nine (BGLOs) DO NOT RECRUIT. Our priority is definitely not numbers!!

I couldn't have said it any better DST Love.

Hmmm...a lot of TKE's seem to hear quite a few rumors about BGLO's. I've noticed that not only on this message board but also among the TKE's that I am cool with on my University.

While I somewhat agree with your second statement, I have to constructively disagree with your first. Having informationals and rushes/smokers is a form of recruitment. I would say that the NPHC does not recruit IN THE SAME MANNER as the NIC/NPC. But yes, the NPHC does recruit.

While I am inclined to agree that NPHC priorities in not in number of members, I would venture to say that membership retention (as well as attrition) is just as important in NPHC orgs as in NIC/NPC orgs.

I know many members of NPHC organizations who would say that informals, rushes or smokers mean nothing as to gaining membership in a NPHC organization. Members already know who they want way before any of these events are held and they are just formalities. This of course depends on the chapter or region that you are apart of. It also depends on the particular organization.

Then why have them? To me it would appear to be a waste of time and effort if that was the case.

Please do not think I'm trying to be a smart aleck but I don't care what you venture to think about NHPC because you are not a part of it. Myself and showstopper_1908 know what we are talking about. And as I said, the Divine Nine DO NOT RECRUIT!! Point blank!! If an interest is working hard to gain membership into one of the organizations, then maybe at that point a member may just encourage them to continue doing so as they could be a great asset to the organization. But that would be after that person has already expressed and displayed a sincere interest in the organization. We are not going to try and make anyone see how great our organizations are and then just let them slide in. Interests need to show US why they deserve to be in these outstanding organizations. And having informationals/rush is not a form of recruitment. At the point these are held, most of the interests have already been working to show that that is the organization they seek. If it were a form of recruitment, then I would've been able to attend two or more of the Divine Nine Sororities' informationals and submit my information to all of them and be selected to one or more of them without ever attending any of those sororities' events or introducing myself to them. And I think we all know that DEFINITELY isn't how it works. And like showstopper_1908 said, at the point of informationals/rush, the members know pretty much who they're thinking of taking. It's just more of a formality.

As far as numbers, as I said it isn't a priority. Of course, all organizations like to retain active financial members. They also do need a constant flow of new members to maintain the organization, hopefully forever. However, we will not just choose anyone so that we can boast about numbers. Because if we do that, then we would probably end up with only members that quit after the college experience or only care about letters and not ANY who will work for the organization continuously. While the organizations do have members that end up never doing anything for the organization, if we cared only about numbers, then those are the only members we would have and our organizations would have been fallen apart. If people are FORCED or RECRUITED to seek our organizations, then I doubt they would necessarily want or feel the need or desire to work for the organization continuously as opposed to people who sought the organization out because they had been watching, wanting, learning from and being influenced by the organization for years. We want people who can be committed forever. After all the Divine Nine is a LIFETIME COMMITMENT.

You know it amazes me how these people beleive that their dog and pony shows that they put out to try and attract faithfull members is no where near what we do as memebers of BGLO's. We do not have big parties and submit people's name into a computer database and pick randomly our brothers and sisters. Seeking membership is designed so that you realize the gravity of what you may potentially become a part of. And best beleive that many are called and even fewer are choosen to have the opportunity to become members. And that is exactly why BGLO's have their members stay active in their organization and pass thier love for their organization on into graduate chapters and their childrens. It becomes not just that organization they joined in college, it becomes a part of who you are. Maybe you don't understand that type of dedication because the most you have ever done for your organization is throw the biggest party with the biggest kegs.

And that is my 19 hundred and 8 cents on the matter.
