'U' Student Injured In Riot Got $400K Settlement
(WCCO) Minneapolis A student injured in riots near the University of Minnesota in April 2003 will receive $400,000 from the City of Minneapolis.
April 12, 2003 was one of the University of Minnesota's ugliest nights. Thousands of students and others rioted after the Minnesota Gophers hockey team won the national championship.
More than 100 officers, many in riot gear, responded to violence near the University. The mob set fires and trashed the streets in Dinkytown. Eleven students were arrested.
As officers tried to bring the unruly crowd under control, Jeffrey Arndt was allegedly shot with a bean bag projectile while walking home to his fraternity house.
Friends took Arndt to the hospital, where doctors had to remove his ruptured spleen.
Friends said Arndt was not involved in the riot. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Arndt filed a lawsuit against the Minneapolis Police, which the Minneapolis City Council settled in early November, for $400,000.
On Wednesday night, Minneapolis Police officials said they were unprepared and overwhelmed by the scene they faced during the post-game riot.
Deputy Chief Don Harris called Arndt's injury "unfortunate" and "unintentional". Harris said the department has made operational changes since then, so it is better prepared to handle future incidents.
WCCO-TV was unable to reach Arndt for comment Wednesday.
