It could get very confusing if lots of Greeks start having their information engraved on the back of older badges. How confusing would it be if you found an old style badge clearly from say the 1920s and the member information on it was from 2011 or something?

You can tell when one has been buffed off. It's apparent even when done well. My other badge was pristine, and the pictures of this badge show a very shiny back. I am highly doubtful that it's been buffed. As for engraving any of the badges that have no dates, I don't see a problem. The badge has no identifying data and is thus less valuable than a badge with a year dating it. Any badge I have with identifying information would never be re-engraved. It would #1 lessen the value and #2 remove the original sister's history from the piece. I have a badge from 1915. It would instantly lose value if that date was missing from the piece.

First of all, absolutely beautiful AOII pin shown above - kudos!
About the engraving, I've seen some pins with up to three names & chapters on them - probably legacy pins. I see no reason why you couldn't do that and still retain the beauty of the pin. It's really about how good the jeweler is at his craft.
And... If I can get a private moment tomorrow, I'm going to call our EO to see if the new pin can be ordered in yellow gold. This should be interesting!

I'm trying to picture an AEPhi badge with all that information engraved on it... and I can't.
We get our initials engraved on the back of the gold bar that connects the letters. There's really not much room for anything else. (Well, you could probably fit an initiation date or at least a year, but that's not offered to us as an option. Nor is chapter designation - if you want something to identify your chapter, you buy a guard.)

My earliest badge is from 1931 and the clasp on the badge in the photo looks older than mine. I am not sure when Sigma Kappa went to a single vendor for out badges, but I do hope a sister out there knows and can provide some history for us.

Well we had:
as of 1909. I don't know any other bits of the timeline though.

The lettering looks very similar to a 1906 badge that I've seen online, however I couldn't tell you for certain.

FYI: very similar badge, engraved on back and dated 1928, knuckle clasp/whale tail spinner, available now on that site. Actually could be a twin to the photo you've posted. Same style of lettering, straight edges, etc.
Does that help?
Most knuckle clasp/whale tail badges I've seen are from the 1920s and 1930s but I am not an expert at all. Just reporting what I've seen.

If you'd like more, I rather enjoy picking them out of old greek magazines out of Google Books.

why thank you! I need to have the clasp fixed somehow. The pin part is bent (it still clasps, though) and it feels super flimsy, especially in comparison to my pin (granted mine is only 3 years old haha)
