Sigma Phi Epsilon at Virginia Tech has lost their charter due to RMF.

In happier news, here is an article in the Florida State University paper about the expansions of Alpha Omicron Pi and Beta Theta Pi. Both groups will be colonizing in the Fall.

I think they're the fifth NIC fraternity to start an interest group on campus in the past two years...when they charter, they'll be the 29th fraternity! TKE, ADPhi, Phi Mu Delta, and Sigma Alpha Mu also have interest groups on campus right now.

Just an FYI - Phi Mu Delta closed their colony last year. Sigma Tau Gamma colonized, but has not chartered at this time.

The FSU news got it wrong. AOII was at FSU-their house was next door to Delta Gamma (I hope that they retained ownership of their house). Beta Theta Pi was also active on campus as a chapter, not simply a colony. They were lucky enough to have a house situated between Pi Phi and ADPi-what guy wouldn't love that?

Oh! I didn't know...they were still active last fall semester! And I didn't know about Sig Tau either! I know that they joined the IFC on campus last semester (after spending a little time on the Greek Affiliate Member Council) and had a lot of success recruiting members...I guess I equated that to chartering! Things just work so differently with fraternity vs. sorority colonizations.

Not that sorority colonization is easy, but fraternity colonization can be tough. There are a lot of hoops to jump through, and the average colony time is 1-3 years.

In order to charter, the typical (not all) fraternity colony must:

- have a specific number of members (Sigma Chi minimum is 30; I've seen another group that requires 45-50)

- have a specific amount of money in a bank account

- show that they have had at least 1 or 2 successful rushes (this can be tough, because the colony members have to sell the rushees on the benefits of the current colony brotherhood, future national brotherhood, and undertaking the work of gaining the charter; many guy pnms would rather join an established group where - quite frankly- they don't have to work so hard)

There is more involved, but these three can be the make or break issues of a colony gaining its charter.

Due to RMF, Sigma Nu has closed their chapter at California Polytechnical University-Pomona. The chapter will be eligible to return in 2019.

The Delta Upsilon chapter at Virginia Tech has been closed due to low membership.

I've seen the Sigma Chi chapter at my school go from colony to chapter. It seems Sigma Chi has very strict parameters for chartering. Also from what I was told the minimum was the campus average (although at my campus that was 35 so still close to 30). They also had to have average amount of community service and money raised based on other chapters as well.

Metropolitan State University of Denver, four organizations accepted the invitation to present:

Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. (NMGC)
Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Inc. (NALFO)
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (NPHC)
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (NPHC)

The expansion committee was to vote and release the information about expansion/chapter chartering May 2013. To date, nothing has been released about the status of the committee's decision, if there is one.

Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Omicron Pi have been selected to present in October at UC-San Diego. Good luck to all groups that are presenting!
