Mount Olive: Omega Upsilon sorority sponsors "Reading for Joy"

MOC sorority sponsors reading visits to elderly

Mount Olive College

Some Mount Olive College students have been participating in a community involvement project called "Reading for Joy."

Sponsored by the Omega Upsilon Sorority, the program provides a way for undergraduate students to visit and read to retirement home residents. They have been enjoying the book "Big Fish," by Daniel Wallace.

"Reading this book and participating in all of the associated activities are our ways of responding to the Wayne County Public Libraries' efforts to get all of the Wayne citizens involved in reading," Blue said.

"Our MOC students are involved in 'Big Fish' activities as a literacy outreach activity because they feel it is part of their civic mission and they care about literacy in the community," he added.

"Our students get the chance to share a story that excites memory to a set of folks whose memories exceed half a century. If only one smile or one statement that starts with 'I remember when' occurs, their efforts are successful. I predict that this will reward all that participate."

As a librarian, I think that this is a *great* outreach program! More orgs should consider doing something like this, whether it's picture books to kids in the hospital or novels to seniors.
