U of Rochester: Possible NPC Sorority Expansion

From campus paper:

http://www.campustimes.org/panhell-l...rity-1.2111214

Excerpts:

Panhell looks to add seventh sorority
By Jerome Nathaniel
Thursday, December 3, 2009
Updated: Thursday, December 3, 2009

Panhellenic Association last expanded its sorority community in 1991, adding two sororities. Eighteen years later, as interest and popular demand continued to grow, the Panhellenic Association agreed to expand and seek additional sororities to add to the six existing chapters in the University.

With the collection of data and the support of the Fraternity and Sorority Management Committee, the Panhellenic Association deliberated last night and concluded that an additional sorority would be both feasible for the Greek community. A sorority chapter member of the National Panhellenic Conference is likely to join the River Campus as early as March 2010.

Before gaining FSMC’s support, the Panhellenic Association formed the Panhellenic Association Exploratory Committee to compile and distribute data to currently existing sorority chapters, as well as their national representatives. Some of the data that was used included an analysis of recruitment statistics for every spring semester from 2000 to 2009, University student population data, a forecast of the growth of Greek communities from 2009 to 2012 — assuming that they will continue to grow at the same rate — and overall Panhellenic Association recruitment statistics. The data was passed on to chapters and representatives to be used in their evaluation of the demand and impact of adding a seventh sorority.

According to Director of Sorority and Fraternity Affairs Monica Miranda Smalls, the data showed a considerable growth in the Panhellenic Association sorority community, specifically in the past five years.

The information was pivotal to the final decision, as well as to determining the maximum amount of women that should be in each chapter.

Panhellenic Association President and senior Ivy Giserman noted that since the spring of 2005, the number of potential new members participating in the Panhellenic Association’s recruitment has increased by 97 percent. Giserman suggested that the statistics not only indicated a need for expansion, but a responsibility to maintain the intimate size of UR sororities.

. . . UR will be featured in the next NPC bulletin to advertise UR’s availability for expansion.

My wish list . I'd love to see Kappa recolonize our UVM chapter - we have 21 inactive chapters and it would be great to have only 20! I have friends at Elon and CofC and they seem like wonderful schools. And we have no Delaware chapters, so UDel would be great... and close to us in Baltimore!

Hi Lane Sig:

Sad news, but on the bright side, it seems there's a possibility of a fall 2010 return:

DU is closing its chapter at Penn State:

http://www.centredaily.com/tilc/story/1424018.html

Excerpts from artilce:

Thursday, Jul. 30, 2009
STATE COLLEGE — The alumni board of a Penn State fraternity is shutting down the house, saying the students living there caused a long list of problems ranging from not taking care of the property to offering marijuana to a visitor from the fraternity's leadership.

The Penn State Delta Upsilon alumni board is in the process of expelling the members from the house at 229 Locust Lane, saying ongoing efforts to work with them didn’t stop the problems. The alumni board plans to reopen the house in fall 2010 with new members.

. . . John DelSignore, alumni corporation president and 1992 Penn State graduate, said the decision was made about a week and a half ago.

. . .Alumni treasurer Dave Merenda, a 1977 Penn State graduate from Atlanta, said there were 48 members on campus. He is one of the alumni in the house while it is being shut down. If the five members still haven’t left by Friday, Merenda said he’ll file eviction papers.

“We have guys that are 70 years old, and it’s breaking their hearts,” Merenda said.

The problems have been going on for several years, and some are visible — a broken window, damaged floors, holes in the walls and a stair bannister ripped from a wall. Other problems were drug and alcohol related.

The chapter ended up in redevelopment — a sort of probationary oversight — after a fraternity member offered marijuana to a representative of Delta Upsilon International during a visit. . . .

To LaneSig: Can you check on your listing for "Elon College (SC)" ? Just curious... what source did you use to create this expansion list? Maybe you mean Elon University in North Carolina? Thanks.

You are correct; it was supposed to be Elon University.

My sources are from people I know at different GLOs who are kind enough to send me the information. Often, they will ask me to hold back information until it is announced publicly. Usually, if the expansion is announced in the NPC extension bulletin, someone will bring it to my attention.

Just found out some dates! Pi Beta Phi will be presenting on Tuesday, May 4th and Alpha Chi Omega will be presenting on Thursday, May 6th. I would imagine the extension committee will have a final decision that Friday (the 7th) at their regular meeting time, but I don't know that for sure.

Exciting! Are you going to be able to see either presentation? I really hope I'll be able to do that some day when my school expands again.
