I love watching Say Yes to the Dress and there have been a couple of times that a bride walks away without a dress because she is sooooo determined to have her "ideal" dress even when it doesn't look good on her (and she even says so). I remember one where the bride was insistent that she have a "princess" ball gown and she looked bad in all the dresses she tried on. She hated them all. The consultant wanted to have her try on either an a-line or a fit and flare and she refused because she "wanted her ball gown". But the bride kept saying she hated how she looked in the dresses. You think that would be the first hint that maybe you should try on something else.
I saw another where the bride wanted this pink, floral beaded mermaid Lazaro gown. She tried it on and she looked awful. I hate to say this but she looked like a stuffed pig. It didn't flatter her at all! The consultant knew this and very nicely brought in silhouettes that fit her better, but the girl was insistent on the pink number, even though her friend was like "I don't think that is the right one for you" (at least I think her friend wasn't a supporter of the gown).
The consultants can only do so much.
For me though, I hate strapless. I have no desire to have strapless when I get married. I don't want to be pulling a dress up all night or having to worry about my "goods" falling out and flashing the world. I figure I'll try them on and then ask for straps to be added and the stays to be taken out.

It's recommended that if you have never tried on dresses EVER (like, this is your first bridal appointment ever) that you try at least one of every style (like, an A-line, a mermaid, some strapless, some not.)
You'd be surprised at how many women come into stores like "I only WANT a mermaid" or "NO LACE" and end up with something different than what they pictured would look good on them (like a lace mermaid.)
Also common: women who have pinned down a CERTAIN dress (i.e. "I want the Karena Royale by Maggie Sottero"), then go to a store specifically to try it on and realize that in reality, they hate it and/or it looks terrible on them. A client of mine was dead set on a specific Enzoani gown since before she was engaged. A week after her engagement, she made an appointment at the nearest Enzoani retailer salon to try it on. HATED IT in person. Ended up with a completely different gown and designer.

I was watching a new episode of the Castle TV show last night and they have Becket in this truly awful wedding dress. It just made me want to vomit. Anyone else have the same reaction?

It felt like two dresses were combined between a sheath and a ballgown. The poof at the hips was off setting because it was out of place to me and the color of the poof and the main gown were different! Also the beading on the sleeves seemed odd.
For reference:

That looks like a Barbie gown or Disney princess gown (which would look lovely on a toy or on a cartoon figure), made life-size.

haha! I do think that they look nice. I am not sure that it will be quality though. And for the price point you can easily get a nicer brand bridal gown.

Therein lies the key with DB. You're paying a lot, for cheapy replicas of Vera/Zac/etc. designs when for that price point, you could get something nicer from an actual brand.

Exactly! Even if you can't get it brand new, you can always look on the pre-owned sites.

Through size 26? Good gravy. Zac Posen never has designed to make a plus-size woman look good, and he still isn't. Not even a plus MODEL would look good in a strapless fitted mermaid gown. Straps and body-skimming fabrics, ladies. That's how to look awesome as a 26.
