LSU Rush

I am transferring to LSU in the fall from a small university. I will have 63 hours, so I will technically be considered a "junior", however, I am pursuing a double major, so I have at least 6 more semesters left at LSU...possibly more, depending on how scheduling turns out. Right now my GPA is a 3.4, but after this semester it should be around 3.7.

My current school only has 3 NPC sororities, and I never saw the point in rushing when I knew I would be transferring. I know LSU is a hard school to receive bids for, so what are my chances of getting any? I love being involved on campus and these past 2 years have been pure torture because all of my greek friends had tons of events to go to and I was just kind of left out because I didn't rush.

My resume is pretty decent, but most of my extracurricular activities are from high school, because like I said, I'm transferring from a small university where there wasn't much going on.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

LSU does not have an upperclass quota, so going through as a junior will be more difficult, IMO.

Remember that Alpha Phi will be colonizing this fall. Usually colonies are looking for freshmen plus upperclass women who can assume leadership positions. Your grades sound like they will be a plus for you so study hard and keep that GPA high!

Just keep all options open. I wish you good luck!

Ok, so I saw the information about Alpha Phi colonizing on the lsugreeks website, but wasn't sure if I still have to go through formal recruitment. From everything I've read, sororities that are colonizing usually pull out of formal recruitment after the first day and then hold meetings a few weeks into the semester. If this is the case, should I not sign up for formal recruitment and just wait until they start holding meetings?

You can put all of your eggs in one basket and just sign up for Alpha Phi's colonization. You are not required to sign up for formal recruitment to be elegible for a colony.

In my experience, many PNMs start formal recruitment to meet lots of women and see all of the sororities and what they have to offer. If, after starting the process, they are not happy with their choices or are released, they pursue membership with the incoming colony.

Alpha Phi has been very successful with their colonizations at Alabama and Florida State. I would anticipate that this will be the same at LSU.

I think Alpha Phi will do very good. I can not honestly tell you how they will go about recruiting for the colony. As i said my daughter time in the sorority is coming to an end. She will be moving on the alum status in a few weeks so she hasn't paid much attention to what is happening!!!
I would go ahead and try it, it can't jurt and you never know.

We really can't say "well you have x% chance of getting a bid."

I will say that it's worth trying. However, just know that it's more than grades.

I find that many of the non-freshmen women at more competitive schools who DO manage to receive bids are those who are well-connected with active sorority members.

By well-connected, I don't mean "Oh, I sit by an ABC in my one class" either. Upperclassmen women who get bids are usually rather good friends with members in such a way that their sorority member friends already KNOW they're rushing (yes, in April) and already know that they would like to have said PNM in their chapter.

What I can promise you is that if you don't do rush you will not be in a sorority so give it a shot unless you are one of these girls who will be devastated if you don't get a bid. If you do decide to do it, and I think you should, get 2 recs for every chapter and keep a very open mind. Just go in there and knock them dead.

My daughter is in a LSU sorority. She has said that is very hard for upperclassmen to get bids. It does happen but usually they know girls already. Are you from Louisiana? Do you know girls in sororities at LSU? That would be very helpful. I don't know how much the double major will matter. My daughter has a double major also but is going alum this year. I am not sure if it is a policy of her sorority for students considered srs. to go alum or if she chose to because most of her friends are already gone or graduating this year.
Do not get your heart set on any group. Have recs, at least two. And definetly consider the colony.
If you have any other question I will be glad to help if possible.

I am a Louisiana native and I do know girls in a sorority at LSU, but they're all in the same one and from what they've said, it's rare that they bid on upperclassmen. I'm trying to keep my mind open to all sororities, but sometimes it is difficult.

Wanted to say a little more but I had to take an amazing race break.
It will probably be hard to not care about the reputations of the sororities especially if you have friends telling you different things. Try your best to make up your own mind. I know that I am not a 19-20 year girl so I see things very differently than you will. In the last four years I have been around LSU and Baton Rouge a lot ( went today!) I have seen and met girls from almost every sorority. None of the girls I have seen have lived up or down to the rumors you hear about them. Walking across campus one day I noticed this beautiful, supermodel looking girl, when I looked the letters on her tshirt it was the sorority that others will tell you is the fat ugly girls. My daughters sorority is supposed to be the one with pretty girly girls. Yes there are lots of pretty girls but I have seem some not so cute ones also. Her best friend from high school is in one that has the rep of being wild, she is one of the few girls of my daughters aquaintance that does not party at all.
My point is that no matter what you hear there are great girls in every soroity and not so great girls in them too. They all do the same things, exchanges, grubs, formals, songfest, greekweek, etc. You will have a great time no matter which sorority you join.
And if you don't join one there are so many other things to do you will still have a great time.
