Are you counting triangles and diamonds as shields? You have, for example, DKE, Delta Sigi, Fiji, Psi U and SAE as shields, but their badges are diamond shaped, which I would classify as a symbol. (Pike, of course, has a diamond on top of a shield.) Meanwhile, you have the triangular badges of Acacia and Phi Mu Delta as shields, while Triangle is given as a symbol and Teke as a combo. My fraternity's badge is also triangular, and we'd never refer to it as a shield.
FWIW, I would only count it as a "shield" if it actually looks like one or if the fraternity in question calls it one (like I think Beta does).

Although it's modeled after the "White Cross" of the French Legion of Honor, don't Sigma Nus call it the "White Star"?

Yeah I was about to mention that about my badge. We always refer to it as the Diamond. And Theta Chi I think would be a combo since it is a monogram, but the monogram is formed by two separate symbols.
ETA: And isn't Sig Eps badge a heart? I think that would count as a symbol and not a shield.

Well, I was counting a shield as any enamel shape, however if the organization does not consider it such I will change it. Perhaps I should add another category for shapes?

My guess is that most shapes -- triangles, diamonds, octogons -- have symbolic meaning, so they could perhaps be symbols.
I guess if I was going to break it down, I'd start by grouping badges by the basic form of the badge itself, not what may be on it. (So Teke and Triangle would simply be triangles, even though they have symbols -- Teke's skull or whatever the engineering apparatus is on Triangle's -- on the triangle). I might group this way:
- Monograms
- Diamonds
- Triangles
- Shields (only badges that look like shields (like KA Order) or that the org itself describes as a shield)
- Other Geometric Shapes
- Crosses
- Other (non-geometric) Symbols (and I think this is where you'd put Sigma Nu and Sigma Phi Epsilon)
- Combinations (At least among the NIC groups, the only ones that really fit here might be Lambda Chi's badge, which has a monogram within the horns of a crescent, Theta Chi's, where the mongram is made using symbols, or Pike's Shield and Diamond)
Just a stab, though. Are there other groups maybe?
btw, Delta Psi's badge is a Tau cross, not a monogram.
ETA: I've been thinking lately it might be fun to waste some time by putting together a chart of what symbols are shared by more than one group and what symbols are unique to only one group. Hmmmmm . . . .

For now the list is only what's on the diagram in my Cornerstone, eventually I'd like to expand it to include additions to the NIC. The categories I have right now are definitly too broad so I'll be working on making them more concise as I go. Definitely a work in progress...
And I think your symbol project would probably come up with some interesting results, MC!

I love the Gamma Phi Beta two tone badge! Probably my favorite NPC badge after my own gorgeous AOII badge
I'll find a pic later of my badge and post it!

It is delightful to look at all the badges, read everyone's comments, and learn about the various badge origins and shapes. Now I have something to read to the actives at the next Chapter meeting (I try to read a little bit of "history" each time it's my turn to sit as Chapter advisor at the weekly meeting). thanks!

I agree completely- it's gorgeous! It's so different from the 2 tone version but both are really beautiful.
AzTheta, I hope the actives appreciate your history tidbits! They're luck to have you

I agree, it's beautiful.
KD has something similar in the shape of our badge. I would love to have one but it's far too expensive for me.
I was looking at all the jewelry and I really love this recognition pin: I love our badge but looking at this pin I was wondering "what if" our founders had gone with a dagger-shaped pin. I think it's nice looking.

I love the "badge-shaped" necklaces.
HJ has a "badge-shaped" diamond necklace for Tri Sigma as well:

I've loved this since I first saw it. I might get it when I celebrate 10 years of being a Sigma in 2 years.
I have enjoyed seeing everyone's badges, and their options.

Well, since homeward*bound posted her historical badge, I'll post mine. Getting to wear it for the first time on Sunday for the local chapter's initiation, and then next weekend for Founders Day.
It's white gold with graduated pearls. The original owner was initiated in 1923.

^^^ another beauty! I am (I must admit) envious that GPhiB has so much "real estate" and there are infinite variations in the badge; yet the integrity of the design is maintained. And the Hebrew letters are unique as well as eye-catching.
The Alpha Phi badge (above) in silver - love it. And the Kappa Delta dagger...
Truthfully, there is not a single badge that I do not like (huh? what'd I say?).
