Murray State officials place 4 fraternities on social probation
Alcohol consumption violates regulations

The Murray State News

The Year of the Greek is off to a rocky start after delegates from four fraternities admitted to consuming alcohol at the University-sponsored Greek Retreat.

Rob Whitfield, public relations director for the Interfraternity Council, said a custodian found empty alcohol bottles and cans in the trash. He said consuming alcohol violated the regulations of the center and the Constitution of Murray State's IFC.

While this is a specific requirement, the fraternities were not made aware of these regulations and were not made aware that they applied at this (particular event)," said Whitfield, senior from Paris, Tenn.

Mike Young, assistant vice president of Student Affairs, said all fraternities and sororities were placed on social suspension immediately after the University received a phone call from a staff member at Jonathan Creek Camp and Convention Center.

Young said University officials who attended the retreat were unaware any attendees were drinking alcohol and no negative behavior, such as fighting, or damages were reported.

Individuals from Alpha Gamma Rho, Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Chi fraternities confessed to drinking in their rooms, and University officials removed the suspension from the other Greek organizations. He said Wednesday the four fraternities remained on social probation.

"(Social probation) means that they are not to have any social functions until they are taken off," Young said.

He said the fraternities can, however, participate in the recruitment process, which takes places next week. All recruitment events are required to follow the no alcohol policy during Rush Week.

The IFC also charged the four fraternities $250 each and offered the money to Jonathan Creek. The involved members also volunteered for 85 combined hours of community service at the facility.

"We felt that was a way we could hold these individuals responsible for breaking the law," Rob Whitfield said.

The Interfraternity Council received a letter Wednesday from Jonathan Creek stating they received the donation.

"They were very satisfied with the measures that we took and the speed at which we rectified the situation," Whitfield said. "Furthermore, the camp welcomed Murray State Greeks and any student organization to use the facility in the future."

Despite this negative incident, Mike Young said the University is still supporting the Greek system and is asking Greeks to follow the values on which their organizations were founded.

"We plan to move forward," Young said. "We still want this to be a positive year for the Greeks."

Four delegates from each of the University fraternities and sororities attended the retreat held Aug. 26-28. A total of 80 Greek members and four Murray State administrators were present.

"The purpose of the retreat was to promote Greek unity and empower the Greeks to work together in the Year of the Greek campaign," Rob Whitfield said.

He said many positive results emerged from the retreat, and the IFC is in the process of establishing an all Greek community service event.

A motion to close the vast majority of fraternity parties passed Monday at the IFC meeting by a two-thirds majority.

The decision allows three open parties a semester and prohibits non-greek males from attending the fraternity parties if they are not on the list. Whitfield said this is because non-greek males have not undergone the mandatory alcohol education that Greeks must complete.

Whitfield said the vote passed because it reflected the liability and accountability fraternities have had to deal with but is not in response to the incident that occurred at the retreat. He said the regulations were discussed this spring.

Phone calls to the four fraternities involved were not returned or the members would not comment at press time.

As Artie Johnson said, "Veery Inteereesting"!

If I am an adult, then who has the right to tell Me that I cannot have a drink In My Room?

The custodian found empty alcohol containers in rooms. Who said they were not there before or placed there?

Is every College Student in the world under 21?

Thou Shall Not drink Demon Rum, So saith the ADM.

Out of curiousity, who pays fees to go to Schools? So the Fees Pay what? Salarys etal.

Donations by Alums help Colleges expand only.

Actually some of the Crap put out by Adm. is getting tiring!

Oh, Hey, are anyother Orgs. so under The Microscope?

Tom, some facilites are dry - specifically if they are religious. Its their right to request that people not consume on the property.

However, I dont think entire chapters should get disciplined for this. I think the individuals should be held accountable. Judicial Affairs always has a way of getting to the bottom of things like this if no one wanted to 'fess up'.

It definately isnt a chapter thing tho.

Murray State University (~10,000 +) is a public college in Kentucky.

As I understand it, the Jonathan Creek Camp and Convention Center is "dry" and Murray State's IFC had specific 'no drinking' rules at the retreat. And most likely, some/all of the guys may have been underage.

Otter: Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests - we did.
[winks at Dean Wormer]
Otter: But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!

Officials continue IFC investigation
By Stephanie Zeller
Published: Friday, September 23, 2005
The Murray State News

University officials will meet Monday morning to determine the status of social suspension for four fraternities whose members admitted to drinking alcohol at the Greek Retreat in August.

Mike Young, assistant vice president of Student Affairs, said the suspension will be removed if the service hours and $1,000 donation meets the University officials' "satisfaction of accountability."

Alpha Gamma Rho, Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Chi were charged $250 each, but the members have yet to complete their combined 85 hours.

Young said he received an e-mail from Michael Brown, Interfraternity Council president, which stated the coordinator of Jonathan Creek, where the retreat was held, said he would have a date when the individuals could complete their service hours.

"They will remain on probation until the community service hours have been completed," Young said.

Rob Whitfield, public relations director for IFC, said the facility responded positively to the apology letter and the monetary donation. He said they are hoping the suspension will be removed by next week.

However, Jonathan Creek officials also alleged fraternity members defecated on room towels while at the retreat.

"The University was informed that a towel was found with a substance that appeared to be feces," Whitfield said. "Obviously, there was no confirmation as to whether that was actually the case."

Whitfield said IFC conducted an investigation to verify all of the information and found no proof the defecation occurred.

"In fact, there is wide speculation among IFC that is probably did not occur, or if it did, that the substance was not feces but was something like mud," he said. "The area close to the camp, the ground was incredibly muddy and quite frankly, it stank."

However, a Jonathan Creek representative, who requested anonymity, said the maintenance supervisor discovered the towels.

"It was not mud," the representative said.

As to whether ignorance is a legitimate excuse for bringing alcohol, the representative said the fraternities should have known the facility was dry because he spoke with Michael Brown about the rules before the event.

Whitfield said the rules were ambiguous to the individuals. He also said as far as he knows, the involved individuals were of legal drinking age.

Officials agree to remove 4 fraternities' suspension
By Stephanie Zeller
Published: Friday, September 30, 2005
The Murray State News

University officials decided Monday to remove social suspension from the four fraternities whose members admitted to consuming alcohol at the Greek Retreat.

Don Robertson, vice president of Student Affairs, Mike Young, assistant vice president of Student Affairs and Jim Baurer, Interfraternity Council adviser, all met at 9:30 a.m. in the Curris Center office to review written submissions on each fraternity chapter's position about how the individuals who drank alcohol at the retreat were held responsible.

Young said the group made its decision on whether the fraternities' chapters held the individuals accountable for their actions.

"It's not always the group's fault for what a member does," Young said. "So when you hold a specific member accountable for inappropriate behavior, it helps to strengthen the group overall."

The fraternities are allowed to hold parties if they follow the IFC policies, Young said. The fraternities are still on probation, which means the University will continue to observe them, until service hours are completed.

"As long as they do the right things, the probation will go away," Young said.

The officials will then decide if any fraternities remain on probation following the completion of service hours, he said.

Rob Whitfield, public relations director for IFC, said via e-mail the individuals involved were in the process of completing their combined 85 hours this week and would finish tomorrow. "The Interfraternity Council applauds the University's decision to withdraw social suspension sanctions from the four fraternities involved in the Jonathan Creek incident," Whitfield said.

Whitfield said the IFC has no plans to investigate the incident further.

"The Interfraternity Council believes that its $1,000 monetary and 85 hour community service donations are adequate restitution for any and all complaints filed by Jonathan Creek," Whitfield said. "Following the completion of the Jonathan Creek community service hours, the entire incident will be considered closed."
