Appalachian State University recently voted to increase Panhellenic total from 80 to 90.

Indiana State University Fall 2010 Update

Greek life is on the upswing at Indiana State University! In Fall 2009 the quota was only 8 but this year we increased that to 14. Hopefully next year the numbers will continue to go up with the larger freshmen classes.

Here are the final numbers I was given for Fall 2010:

Chi O = 15
Gamma Phi =14
DG = 14
Sigma Kappa = 14
ZTA = 14
AOPi = 15
Alpha Phi = 14
Alpha Chi = 15
ASA =15

Curious about something- The total is listed at 119, but the chapter mean is 158. The smallest chapter as 133 (I think) and the largest 171. Does total mean the maximum number of girls each chapter is supposed to have or is it something else? If its the maximum number then why are the actual numbers so far over total? Can they go that far over the total set without changing total? Sorry if the question is a little ignorant. Just curious about how it works.

A chapter may always take quota during formal recruitment, whether it will put them over total or not. So, if a chapter has 110 members before FR, and then quota is 50, they aren't limited to only taking 9 women (since total is 119) - they can take 50. This would make their chapter at 160, even though total is 119. Being over total DOES prevent a chapter from extending COR bids.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but today most schools update chapter total every semester after recruitment. However, some set a chapter total that remains the same for quite some time. 119 is the number of women the Panhellenic has set as the ideal number all of the sororities should maintain. However, with so many women going through recruitment these days and quotas being larger every year, chapter sizes are considerably larger as well. Hopefully with the addition of the 2 sororities (Delta Delta Delta that recolonized recently and Kappa Alpha Theta recolonizing this fall), this should help bring quota down and hopefully reduce the overall size of the sororities.

Total is the max number each chapter is supposed to have, BUT every chapter is allowed to take quota in formal rush, whether they are at or above total or not. This is so the largest chapters won't be penalized. Numbers like those happen when the number of rushees is increasing from year to year. In other words, it is a healthy problem to have. Many times schools are reluctant to change total until this has happened for several years OR if the "weakest" chapters have just recently gotten up near where the others are in numbers OR if enrollment overall increased for a special reason (like maybe the school changed its requirements or a nearby school closed or something).

It's better for a system to be in this state than the other way around - to have a total that few or none of the sororities reach and that necessitates constant COBing.

Thank you for the replies! Makes sense (pretty much-LOL). Yes, I guess it would be a good problem for a greek system to have (except when daughter is complaining about the incredibly cramped, stuffy conditions during long chapter meetings) but I'm sure that's better than the alternative! Anyway, thanks again for the clarification.

According to the statistics on the recruitment page for Univ. of Oregon quota was 54. It appears all of the chapters took well over quota.
