No Frills Recruitment

Hi there,
How do I find out if a school has a no frills policy? I'm the recruitment advisor for UCLA and I need to find out the policy for their panhellinic...does anyone know how this varies from school to school and where I can find this information?

Thanks

Talk to the head of greek life at the school... That is generally the fastest way to get information... Also the chapter's recruitment team should have a copy of the policies... If not they need to get one... Also it can range drastically from campus to campus... Some have very simple recruitments while others have skits, decorations, etc....

Very true! Contact the head of Greek Life and they will have the rules if the girls do not-- I know my chapter received very specific rules when we changed from frills to no frills (back in archaic 1997!)!

The "no-frills" at my school is pretty odd. They don't let you have decorated name tags. The parties for the days were all in the union (except pref and bid day). Also you may only serve a certain snack on certain day. But, we were able to have preference night at anywhere we want (we did embassy suites) and we served petit fours. That's pretty "frilly" if you ask me.

I am guessing that is the way all no frills go!! Akron is very similar to that!

For those of you that have seen both types of recruitment, which do you think is more effective? Recruitment at Tech is at the complete opposite end of the spectrum when compared to what is described above. I would be interested to observe a 'no-frills' recruitment party.

For an example of no-frills: Contact Greg Mason at University of Central Florida. We went to no-frills in '97, and it is very specific what we may and may not do.

For UCLA, contact the Greek Life adviser-- I believe that would be Ellen Archibald (or maybe she is the one at USC...). Either way, the UCLA Greek Life Coordinator/Director would be the one with the materials you need specific to UCLA. I have worked with the UCLA ADPi chapter and their recruitment is very "frills" compared to my alma mater-- themes, decorated houses and nametags, attire, etc.

Akron went to no-Frills in 1997 also!

To answer Peanut's question I like no frills better. I went through as a PNM with frills recruitment-- and was FRC and RVP with no frills. There was so much work put into recruitment with no-frills that I cannot eveeeeeeen imagine the work in planning skits, decorations, etc in addition!! I believe taking away all of the extras gave us more time to get to know the PNMs and for them to get to know us. But do not get me wrong-- I lovvvvvvvved the skits the year I went through-- definitely ADPIs-- they did "Saturday Night Pi"-- it was hysterical! I know people with frills say they cannot imagine no frills-- but really the transition was not too difficult!

But all in all-- no frills for me!

Yeah, I cannot imagine it w/out all of the skits, decorations, etc., but I would be interested to see it w/out it.

We did Saturday Night Pi, as I'm sure many chapters do, and it was hysterical. I'm not for sure if they are still doing it now. One of our other skits, which I believe we (EE..i could be wrong) wrote, was 'ADPi...Through the Years.' We did it the year of our 150th Celebration. I doubt they are still doing it, but it was an awesome production. (LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of work...)

From what I understand, recruitment @ UNT used to be a lot more "frilly" than it is now.. they had a skit day, and there basically balloons everywhere (from what an older delta told me last year)

For Fall 03, the campus panhellenic voted to make it less frilly... like they took out skit day (from what I heard was a great relief.. the chapters spent so much time focusing on rehersing the skit), they also made specific guidelines for decorations and what can/cannot be served to pnms during recruitment. I would say it's still pretty "frilly" though...

Interesting....At Tech, (well 3 years ago when I was still there), we had 2 skit days and all of the frills that go w/frilly (balloon arches, decorations galore, etc.) My old roommate was RVP and I was rush info mgr., so we spent late late nights at the lodge during and prior to recruitment. (not sure how we managed not to kill each other during that time...lol)

When I went through rush at Tech, there was a philanthrophy day, but there were no set 'rules' on it. At ADPi and 2 other houses, we did an arts and crafts project for the respective philanthropy, but a couple other houses did skits. There were no set rules, which I disagree with. If I recall correctly, my first year on our side of rush at ADPi, we changed the philanthropy day to a skit, just to stay competitive with the other sororities.

Not sure if all the 'frilly' stuff still takes place at Tech, but I'm guessing it does...

/sorry to have completely hijacked this thread!

Okay, just out of curiosity, does the No Frills Recruitment put those sororities without a nice house at a serious disadvantage?

IMHO-- yes it can hurt the houses without a nice house-- but if the girls are great it can usually overshadow the houses! At Akron the first round is not in the houses....so that keeps everything fair so the PNMs do not base their decisions on the houses immediately! Some people think it's crazy to even think a girl bases her decision off of the house (the actual structure), but I know it can be a factor! The two nicest (biggest) houses at Akron are DG (gorgeous with large white pillars....looks straight out of the South) and ADPi (www.geocities.com/adpibetatau)
....the other 3 houses are just smaller and they have a cute homie look to all of them!! But AGD is getting ready to build a new house soon!!

ETA: That is only the front of the ADPi house....it stretches really far back! Hannahgirl is from the DG chapter with the gorgeous house at Akron!!
