Ladies,
I wanted to share an exciting first with all of you:
The Delta Xi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA is about to become the first all-women's organization to field a team for the Carnegie Mellon sweepstakes, which takes place April 15 - 17, 2004.
Sweepstakes, which is also known as the
buggy races are the highlight of each year's Spring Carnival at CMU. They began in 1920 as the "pushmobile races" of Campus Week. Buggies--aerodynamic cylinders designed and built by student groups during the year--are pushed and driven through and around campus over a course measuring more than 4,400 feet. Buggy teams consist of many members – the pushers who race the buggy, the driver who steers, mechanics who repair, flaggers who guide the buggy, and sweepers who maintain the course.
Although buggy was initially an all-male event, co-ed organizations have been involved in buggy since the 60s. In the 1970s, the demand for a women’s race created a separate event for women and men’s races. Despite the fact that women were pushers, driver and at times even flaggers, sweepers and mechanics, there have never been a sorority or other all-women’s team. Previous to this year, Kappa had push teams participating for other organizations dating back to the original women’s race in the 1970s.
Kappa’s program began as an idea two years ago and became a formal program in April 2003 when a gathering of Alumnae and Students made a decision to dedicate time and funding to forming the first ever women’s program. Planning, design and fundraising took place over the spring and summer, and the organization purchased a buggy from another campus organization in the fall of 2003. The sisters then developed a new shell, new steering, and new wheels, and christened their new buggy “Ursula”. The only thing that remains of the former buggy is the metal shell.
Please send your congratulations along to the sisters of Delta Xi for starting a new tradition and leading the way:
