I believe that you meant to write: society's nightmare. We are, as a human race, one society. Therefore the word society is singular. The apostrophy indicates the posessive. Ergo, I believe you meant society's nightmare.

Disagree. Societies in the plural makes sense; it is conceivable that he just forgot the apostrophe on the end...
