The air inside the house blew a .01. Impressive. But putting $315K in fines on 6 guys for a rager seems excessive.

I saw this on Buzzfeed a couple days ago. Apparently the air testing positive for alcohol isn't that surprising.

Dwain C. Fuller, a forensic toxicologist, told BuzzFeed News on Wednesday that air testing positive for alcohol is "actually quite possible."
...
According to Fuller, it does not take a large amount of alcohol for this to happen.

"Something as simple as using ethanol-based hand sanitizer in a closed room or vehicle can result in an ambient alcohol of 0.03 g/dL or probably greater," he said.

For anyone who is interested in the little bit of context I have for this:

Bethesda, MD is probably a ten minute drive from American University's campus. I wouldn't say a lot AU students live there, as it's a more affluent suburb, but it's one of a few in which AU students might live.

AU students, in my estimation, are very middle class, suburban students from the east coast. AU is a good school, but does not have the reputation of George Washington or Georgetown, so AU tends to be the place average students attended if they just wanted to be in DC and their parents could afford it. The students are usually very friendly and welcoming.

Binge drinking is common among youth in Montgomery County, MD, and to me, something like this could have happened in Bethesda among the high school students there.

Anyway, yeah... no new information, but definitely unsurprising given what I know of that section of DC/MD.

Based on the contents of the SAE Member Directory as of the time of this post and only because the names of the parties concerned were publicly published in the news:
  • The Washington City Alpha Chapter is not currently showing up in search results;
  • Tristan Ralph is listed as the Eminent Deputy Archon (Chapter VP) on the Chapter's roster;
  • Jeffrey Becker is listed as the Alumni Chairman on the Chapter's roster;
  • Ashton Acosta, Matthew Berger, and Kevin Alkinburg are listed on the Chapter's roster; and
  • Anthony Acosta is neither on the Chapter's roster, nor found in the member directory.

No information is provided concerning the present status of the Chapter or of any of its members or alumni, nor does the national website have any media statements concerning the chapter (as would happen if National suspends or revokes a charter).

The behavior described certainly falls well short of our national standards and expectations. As to the fines, even if they are warranted (as opposed to excessive), do the authorities really expect to collect north of $50,000 each from college students? They're never going to see anything close to $315k. If this behavior is typical of the chapter, then the charter should be revoked and anyone involved expelled; any truly innocent parties would be automatically suspended by virtue of the loss of the charter, but would be restored to good standing as alumni upon graduation.

According to this article, each of the six residents of the house (the same six who were named, each only 20 years old), individually face up to $315k in fines, not just that total collectively.
