Does any NPC/IFC org have Honorary Membership

I did a search on this, but couldn't find anything. Just something I was wondering.

If your sorority/fraternity does (or pretend that your org does), who would you pick?

Sigma Nu is the only organization that I can speak for. We have no type of honorary membership at all. We initiated our faculty advisor when we received our charter. He went through the same initiation process that we did (and we had to pay the same initiation fees for him that we paid for ourselves).

Phi Mu has three honorary members, all of whom are dead, all of whom are men (hence the honorary part!), and all of whom were leaders in the South when Phi Mu was in its fledgling years.

They're Jefferson Davis (President of the Confederacy), Robert E. Lee (Civil War hero) and Stonewall Jackson.

If I could *pick* somebody? Now that's tough...

I'm sorry, but as a former history teacher, I have to circle that with a red pen! LOL Andrew Jackson had been dead for years when the Civil War began.

"Sigma Alpha Mu has no honorary members. Our Fraternity has never sought men of wealth and prominence for the purpose of impressing candidates with an imposing list of names. It is solely through the success of our own men that we place our hope for reflected glory. The day has long since arrived when Sigma Alpha Mu could proudly proclaim its own "Who's Who"--fratres who have won fame and recognition through their ability and achievements. Our alumni roll now contains the names of scores of men who have risen to prominence--a long list of distinguished physicians, lawyers, judges, educators, authors, entertainers, business executives, etc. We acclaim them all as true sons, not as adopted honorary members. We are indeed proud of them."

(From our Candidate Handbook, p. 19.)

He's listed as Stonewall Jackson. Maybe that's what you're thinking.

Yup. Both Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee once lived in Lexington. Lee was President of my college and Stonewall was a prof at Virginia Military Institute, which is right across the street.

So which one (Stonewall or Andrew?) are we talking about?

I know that some NPC organizations did in the past, but I *think* that none of them do currently. I know for sure AXD doesn't.

This is from "A History of Delta Gamma" (published in 1966):

Quoting George Banta:
"In the elder day ... fraternities on special occasion affiliated students in colleges in which they had no chapters, by registered mail. ... Every fraternity and sorority in the West initiated honorary members and many men abnd women, valuable to them in their fight for not only growth, but existence as well, were oft quoted and oft boasted members. ... In due course there came from Psi chapter a formal announcement ... dated May 27, 1879, notifying me I had been elected to full membership in Delta Gamma." (Banta was instrumental in DG's growth; in 1885 they discontinued the initiation of male honorary members.)

uhh....yeah, stonewall jackson and andrew jackson were two seperate people. Thomas Jonathan (Stonewall) Jackson was a Civil War general born in 1824 and Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States, born in the Carolinas in 1767. Nope, not the same person ;-)

Alpha Sigma Phi does not confer honorary status upon anyone. Like many fraternities, they allow the initiation of faculty advisors if they are not already members of a social GLO. In rare occasions a single individual may be initiated during the national convention/leadership conference's model ritual; these initiates carry full membership in the fraternity but are not affiliated with any active chapter. They carry the chapter designation of Members-at-Large (M-A-L). M-A-L status is also granted to members of Phi Pi Phi Fraternity (which merged with Alpha Sigma Phi in 1939) whose chapter was inactive at the time of the merger and never rechartered.

The son of the late Ralph Burns (longtime past Grand Secretary) was initiated as an M-A-L in the early 80s - he is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, where there are obviously no social fraternities or sororities.
