Staying Active as a Grad Student

I pledged DZ as a Junior and it's looking like I'll be working on my M.A. at the same school. Would it be possible for me to remain active as a grad student?

My sister also attended graduate school at her undergraduate alma mater and remained active (as an advisor) with her collegiate Alpha Gam chapter. My SAI chapter often had members who transferred membership and remained active while in grad school, but SAI membership is often less intense than NPC membership.

I will say (as a recent beginner of grad school) that grad school is MUCH more demanding than undergrad and you may not have as much free time as you think you will.

Ask your chapter president and discuss it with her and the advisers. We had a member when I was in school who was able to retain her active status and lived in the house during grad school.

Check your chapter bylaws to see if membership is defined as undergraduate, or if you have any other clauses limiting membership that would conflict with you being in grad school. If all that looks good, contact your national office and double check.

I am not a DZ, but based on our local chapter, I believe that it is possible on a national level. There is a good chance your chapter will have limitations.

Talk to your president and advisors, because it might depend on the chapter. At my friends chapter, grad students did not stay active however because of the campus culture and the city culture, they basically could still be treated as actives. Could go over to the house all the time, could go to formals, still hung out with the actives, etc.

No, it doesn't depend on the chapter/campus/culture. It depends on what the GLO's (Inter)National Constitution/Bylaws and policies state. Contact your HQ for an absolute correct answer.

You're looking at risk management issues, for starters. There are other issues as well, and I know what I'm talking about, so OP, go to Delta Zeta for an answer. Every GLO is different!

Couldn't it be allowed nationally but a certain chapter's bylaws prohibit it?

And I'm not saying the campus/city culture did/didn't allow it, I'm saying because of the campus/city culture, grad students who were not actives could still interact with the chapter in similar ways as to undergrad.

Yes. It could also be that it is permitted/forbidden by the "letter of the law" both nationally and locally but that a grad student would feel completely unwelcome/welcome.

Honestly, IMO it's best to not make too many chapter policies negating things like this because the minute you make a "no grad students" policy, a superduper grad student that you love comes along and you are kicking yourself.
