Are they serious? I think it just another way to paint GLOs in a negative light!

It's too bad when negative incidences do occur, but when respectable news sources like NBC go out looking for stories, I think that's horrible. When the media portrays the greek system in a negative light, it is completely cliched. Perhaps they should break the mold and create stories that show greeks in a good light...for examle, the largest fundraiser on the UW-Madison campus is Humorology and is done by the greek system....see, we're not all that bad :-P

I would think that the best way to handle this is to forward the link to the International/National/Executive Office of each sorority, and let them blast NBC as appropriate.
I hope they mention a little something called a boycott, should they feel the need to run with this disgrace!

Isn't that exactly what ABC News did about a month ago, and some people on this board actually responded?

Montell did HS hazing show
Montell had two boys who had been hazed by HS sports teams on his show Wed. or Thurs.
The one kid had a badly damaged hand when he tried to hang on to a door, and they pulled him off of it.
The other kid had a woeful story (of being stripped and hazed in the van going to wrestling matches/camp), and his mother sitting behind him saying he was permanently scarred and he would never trust anyone again and he used to be very outgoing, but now sits in his room all the time. His story, and his mother, weren't very believable - they need to quit seeking publicity and sympathy, and get out, get a job, and live.
In both these cases, they reported it to the school and police. In both, I think, the schools said it wasn't their problem, and the police said it was a school problem.
I think every talk show will be doing a hazing story, and I think they will be centered on recent HS sports hazing, especally the NY football camp deal at Mepham HS.

This is kind of BS on NBC's part. Looks like real journalism here going after both sides of the story and all...
Ah well, it's good TV. They show members hazing and then people at their HQ saying they don't haze. Wow.. inspired TV.

Y'all, as long as we keep talking about it, they're going to keep putting them on the air. I bet half the people who posted above are going to watch just to see how bad it is.
Also, can any of you honestly say you've never heard of a chapter who hazes? If that's true, go over to the Risk Managment forum and read a few pages of it. They still talk about hazing in the Greek system because it still happens!!!

While I agree that yes, there are chapters that haze, I also believe that such press is not fair to GLO's as a whole. Our national orgs (some better than others) are really starting to become effective at self-policing. However, when you have hundreds of thousands of members of GLO's around the world, yes, stuff will always happen.
I'm just hopeful that they give it a fair shake and show that the majority of organizations have taken strong stances against hazing. Somehow, I doubt this will be the case. It's not completely irresponsible journalism, the story is out there and it does happen. However, as a member of a GLO I'd like to see NBC show the truth about hazing and how GLO's are self-policing, not just that it occurs.

I'm sorry (and frustrated) to say that while hazing is not nearly as common as it once was in fraternities and sororities, it is still a HUGE problem.
Until it is eliminated completely, we'll still be dealing with stuff like this.

While, LXA and most others do not condone Hazing, unfourtanatly it still happens in certain Chapters. We have all read the reports on LXA, SAE, KS, BTP, ETC. We as Chapters Leaders or Alums fight this, yes it still happens. Unfortunatually we find out about this on the Net!
We are all saddened about this! No matter what this Chapters Name, it reflects not only on the Chapter, the National, and the Total of greekdom.
For me when a Person Dies because of stupidity, whether you call it Hazing or not, it is still ridiculous! I shed a tear each time for OUR LOSS!

I know that hazing is a problem but I dont think making the greek community look bad is going to put a stop to those fraternities that do it. We all know that any national sorority or fraternity does not condone hazing but yes it happens and theres not much anyone can do except pull their charter and thats rare from what Ive seen. Grr NBC is just trying to start something else.

Sweeps week
Hazing is out there - we know that. The networks know that stories that create outrage sell during "sweeps week", the week where audience viewing is measured for purposes of figuring advertising rates.
A good juicy show about hazing will sell. The positive aspects of Greek life are not sexy - but hazing incites that feeling of outrage. That we have universally condemned the practice has no bearing on what sells. And we are all the poorer for it.
Hazing is illegal virtually everywhere - there are statutes that prohibit the practice. Colleges here in California will swoop in and put the kibosh on any chapter engaged in this activity. It's a constant worry and concern, but after 30 years I believe that we've got a reasonable, if unsteady hand, on the practice. We must exercise constant vigilence to prevent a problem.
It is interesting to note that the recent episode that got so much press was unsupervised high school activity, and it appears that the athletic incident mentioned above was also involving high school athletics. Perhaps the network needs to cast it's net wider and seek out those high schools where this takes place. I am confidant that they will find more there than they would on our campuses.
