Question: Total and Quota?
Total at a school is 100 girls. And quota that semester is 50 girls.
Lets say that there are four groups:
A, gets quota ends up with 130 girls.
B, gets quota and ends up with 120 girls.
C, gets 40 during rush and ends up with 110 girls.
D. Gets 40 during rush and ends up with 90 girls.
Question: Which groups can still COB?
Group D only or C & D? And why?
This is a future SAT question.

I would say C and D.
C, eventhough they have total, shoudl still be allowed to COB till they reach quota.
D, didnt make quota, and doenst have total, so they will need to COB until they surpass quota and reach total.
Some chapters and the way thigns happen to work on some campuses, tend to get bigger and bigger, and the smaller chapters often suffer. This is why is it crucial for the smaller chapters to be very aggresive(for lack of a better term) with their COB parties/activities, as well as working on improving things within the chapter that COULD BE leading to the small numbers as well. Ultimately though it all goes back to recruitment and the type of people you recruit and careless voting or whatever during the week.

according to the npc greenbook
each npc fraternity chapter has the right to cob to reach quota or its total allowable chapter size during the regular school year as defined by the school calendar. the purpose of continous open bidding is to enable thsoe chapters which did not pledge quota, or pledged quota but did not reach total to take additional new members immediately following the designated formal recruitment period.
my interpretation is that a chapter may continue to offer bids until they reach total, if they did not meet total during formal recruitment. the only way to exceed total is to maintain your chapter at total at all times , but especially going into formal recruitment, because that is the only time you would be allowed to pledge women and exceed total. the exception would be affiliating an initiated member from another chapter who has transferred to your school.so, the only group who could cob would be "d", who did not reach total. lisa
oops!just read a little further!! the group who exceeded total BUT did not pledge quota may continue to bid girls up to quota! sorry for the misinformation!! so theta princess and sugar and spice, go to the head of the class!!

So for group C, where they got 40 girls during formal rush and with a chapter size of 110 (total is 100) may still COB till they hit 120 girls if they want to.
Because they only got 40 when quota was 50.
Lets create chapter E: chapter E gets 20 girls during Formal Rush bringing their chapter size to 90 girls.
So they can still COB until they hit 120 girls? Because quota was 50 and they only got 20?

I believe that formal recruitment is the only time you may exceed total if quota puts you over. After formal rush is over, a group can only COB if they are still under total.

Incorrect. Every chapter is entitled to COB up to quota, even if they are over total.

transfer student
if you are at total, and a transfer student seeks to affiliate with your chapter, she is allowed to, according to npc rules. an initiated member of your sorority, transferring to your school ,could not be denied the right to affiliate because your chapter was at total.

Does anyone know when this rule went into effect? I was looking through an old (1970s) sorority pledge manual and it mentioned that transfers could not often be accommodated due to chapter total limitations and lack of housing space. I was really surprised when I read that.

She said "after formal rush is over" - I'm assuming snap bidding and such being included in that.
