Going to lose my mind

My 17 year old daughter no longer wants to go to college. No. Her ACT score is in the 95%, and yet she doesn't want to go to school. She wants to go to LA and be a rock star. How can someone so smart be so stupid? Where did I go wrong? And how do I handle this without becoming a raging maniac?

Get Simon Cowell on the phone and let him tell her she won't make it.

ETA: Seriously, the harder you try to push her towards college, the harder she'll resist. She'll still have that ACT score when she's ready to go to college, even if it's after she falls on her ass in LA 2 years from now. Just let her know that you support her in whatever she wants to do, but will only FINACIALLY support her if what she does is college-related.

Very good advice and I totally agree--just remember what happened when Simon told Jennifer she wouldn't make it and be prepared not to have littleBelle buy you a mansion if she does.

Thanks! That song completely contradicts every other song Missy Elliot has worked on, but I'll just say it was written specifically for the movie and leave it alone.

It has to be snowing, somewhere.
And I need my cell phone and water bottle to learn how to beep when I walk off without them, trying to find shade.

Ugh, I'm sorry but this makes me mad. I hate the constant push of this country for everyone to go to college. Just because you're smart, it doesn't mean you have to get a degree. If she wants to go to LA, let her try. Would you rather she go to college and spend 4 years pissing a lot of money down the drain because she doesn't know what she wants to do?
I seriously wish someone had told me it was okay not to go to college. I don't regret joining SK, but I found my passion outside of college and now I'm stuck paying off student loans when I haven't even finished my useless degree yet.

alex, how old are you?

if you were old enough to be the mom of a 17 year old, most likely you would not be in favor of letting your 17 year old daughter move half way across the country to be a rock star. the probability of a random 17 year old from anytown, middle america becoming a rock star is slim. it's great to have dreams, but there needs to be a dose of reality mixed in.

Old enough to know that letting a 17 year old go all starry-eyed and receive a bitter disappointment is the wrong way to go about this. If she wants it to be a reality, I don't see why the correct avenues can't be followed to attempt to facilitate it.
For instance, at one point I thought that writing was what I wanted to do. Instead of just sitting down with a laptop and getting a crappy part-time job, my parents were willing to pay for me to go to writer's workshops, conferences, take courses, whatever it would take to help me as long as I put 110% towards my dream. I just think the same applies here. You can be extremely realistic while helping someone at the same time. That's my point. I'm not saying 'let her go, she'll be fabulous!', I am saying, 'if that's what she wants to do with her life, help her as much as you can but make sure that she's willing to work for it-as long as it's a plausible goal.' Singing and dancing lessons, headshots, recording sessions-if there is raw material, there is always a chance. And naturally I'm not advocating that this continue for the rest of her life either. Say if she hasn't gotten anywhere in 3 years, then it's time to come play mom and dad's way.
If she's willing to work her tail off and she's got the talent to start with, then that's what I'm advocating. Of course, if she can't hold a note in a bucket then this is all null and void and pretend I never said it.
