Her remarks to a diverse audience of sorority women will center on empowering women and navigating life transitions. Convention-goers will also observe presentations by five organizations with hopes of becoming the sorority’s new national philanthropy and gaining access to dedicated funding and hundreds of volunteers. Ice cream lovers in the Albuquerque area are invited to percentage night at Coldstone Creamery on Thursday, September 4th from 6-9 PM. We have a new National Philanthropy!!!!!!

Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. Visits Land of Enchantment for Tenth Annual National Convention

Albuquerque, NM – September 7, 2008 – Members of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. close out a successful convention in Albuquerque, NM.

Chapel Hill, NC – At its tenth annual convention, RouteQNX: An Enchanted Journey, members of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. kicked-off the three day event with the Journey to GAP Lavender Luncheon. Graduate, Alumnae and Professional (GAP) women came together to celebrate the ways in which the Sorority's innovative GAP Program has changed lives. Following the luncheon, dozens of professional women attended the first ever GAP networking hour. "It was a privilege to be able to connect with other career-oriented women and share our experiences, successes, and insights with one another," said Sharon Cacurak (GAP Anchor Chapter).

The Second Annual Multicultural Showcase, An Enchanted ONEderland, in the ballroom at the University of New Mexico brought an end to day of planned events. Performances ranged from Bhangra dancing to spoken word. "It was a great sight to see all the chapters express their creativity in ways that uniquely defined themselves and at the same time conveyed the same message," said the Lambda Chapter.

During business meetings on Saturday, five organizations, Girls Action Network, Girls for a Change, National Association for Multicultural Education, National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Women for Women International, presented their messages to the membership in hopes of being chosen as the new national philanthropy. "It was such a proud moment to see accomplished women from outside Theta Nu Xi excited and honored to be considered for our national philanthropy, " said Keitcha Royal (Xi Beta Chapter). Upon weighing the mutual benefits of aligning with each organization, the national delegation of the Sorority enthusiastically selected Girls for a Change, a national organization that empowers thousands of teen girls to create and lead social change, as the Sorority's new national philanthropy.

On Saturday night at the annual Butterfly Banquet and awards ceremony, Mary Molina Mescall, Executive Director of the New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women, presented to the membership a message of women's empowerment. Mescall, a 30-year public servant and women's advocate, addressed the inequalities that exist between women and men stating that "the glass ceiling has many cracks in it but it is still there." Her anecdotes and impassioned words were met with rousing applause and she was honored with a standing ovation when she concluded her remarks. Mescall has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work including the Governor's Distinguished Public Service Award, the City of Albuquerque Human Rights Bridge Award, YWCA Woman on the Move Award, NAACP Freedom Award, Governor's Award for Outstanding New Mexico Woman, the National LULAC Hispanic Woman's Hall of Fame, IMAGE de Nuevo Mexico Award, MANA Brindis Award, Hispanic Round Table Lifetime Achievement "Walking the Talk" Award and Soroptimist "Making a Difference for Woman" Award.

At the farewell breakfast on Sunday morning, four new National Board Members were sworn into office and Philadelphia, PA was announced as the location for Convention 2009. Many left Convention having been inspired to press forward with the challenging mission of the Sorority. "Learning that sisters are balancing law school, graduate school, families, work and life in general made me realize that the only limits that exist are the ones I place on myself," said Priscilla Suggs (Phi Chapter). "I am grateful to be a part of such a successful, beautiful sisterhood."

Introducing Girls For A Change

Chapel Hill, NC, United States, 10/14/2008 - Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. selected Girls For A Change (GFC) as its national philanthropy at the sorority’s 10th annual national convention in Albuquerque.

GFC is a national non-profit organization that empowers girls to create social change.

Whitney Smith, Co-CEO for GFC, said, “Theta Nu Xi is a leader in supporting multicultural community connections and nurturing women into leadership. We are incredibly honored to be chosen by Theta Nu Xi as their philanthropic partner. We feel that this is a perfect partnership that will greatly enrich the lives of the young women we serve.”

Founded in 1999, GFC is the only national organization exclusively focused on giving girls from low-income neighborhoods a voice by engaging them in social change. GFC provides girls with skills, support and resources to increase their self-confidence and self-efficacy by inviting them to identify, design and lead social change projects in partnership with women volunteers that address some of the most challenging issues facing their communities.

GFC empowers girls to speak up, to become decision makers, to solve problems and to create visionary change. By connecting them with professional women trained to serve as volunteer coaches, girls develop trusted relationships with powerful role models for civic engagement and women become strong advocates for the girls and their neighborhoods.

Just out of curiosity. I read on a different thread where you stated that Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc is currently not part of the NMGC. To your knowledge to date, does this organization have plans to seek membership or will it remain independent?

I ask this because my institution is preparing for expansion and at this time we have a group of interested ladies who would like to expand this organization to our campus. However, they were told by our Director of Greek Life that because Theta Nu Xi is a relatively young organization, the possibility for expansion would be lessened due to the fact that programming, support from Nationals, risk management, and insurance may be issues that may not be satisfactorily addressed and if they are not part of a larger Umbrella organization that they may not be successful in their expansion efforts. From what is understood, umbrella orgs give our admin a greater sense of security. This has left the ladies confused but even more determined to realize their goal seeking expansion. They feel that they would have adequate support from both the organization and the institution but this recent revelation has left them wondering what to do.
What advice are you able to offer to assist in their efforts?
