Alumnae Initation and Legacy

If a woman is an AI, are her children legacies?

Also, if my mom would like to be AI into Alpha Phi, is she a legacy because I am a sister?

An AI, at least in my organization, if a full member with all rights pertaining too. They go through ritual just as any member would--so yes, her children are legacies. We have AIs who have children and we do consider them legacies.

As far as "reverse legacy" I believe your mother could qualify since a legacy is usually a direct relative of a member (a sister, daugther etc.) but I would say that would depend on the organization. I am sure other Alpha Phis can answer that question completely.

In DG AI has the same rights as a collegiate Initiate. She is sister. Her children are considered legacies. I don't know how it works with mothers but have to assume that you could be her sponsor.

AOII AI and Legacies

In AOII, an AI is a full member and has all of the rights of a collegiate member. Her children, grandchildren, and sisters are also legacies. I am an AI and my mother is an AI, too!

Question: Is your mother trying to join via AI or through collegiate recruitment? Depending on the organization (as is seen in the "sticky" threads on this board), your organization may have an AI program in place to initiate mothers.

I think she will do it through my alumni group if they are willing to do an initiation (i haven't talked to anyone). We were going to do some last year, but we just but we ran out of time (we are a new group straight out of NCSU)

We had a mom who became a Gamma Phi Beta AI a few years ago. At the time she had a daughter who was a member of Gamma Phi at UGA. We called her (the mom) a "reverse legacy." The year after the mom became a member via AI (they are full members no different from those initiated in college) her other daughter pledged Gamma Phi also at UGA. She was by then a "double legacy." Incidentally, one of our recent AI's daughter just pledged Gamma Phi at FSU -- as a legacy, she was at the top of their bid list (alphabetically. of course!)

My chapter had the honor of initiating an alumnae's mother. The daughter wasn't an AI, but that shouldn't matter. It was absolutely beautiful. I cried because I'm a big dork like that.

Absolutely!

I guess in a way yes, although we don't use the term legacy in that case. I guess because by definition a legacy is something you pass down, not up but that's my assumption. We definitely welcome Mothers much the same way we welcome legacies.

In Alpha Phi, only collegiate chapters can initiate women, including alumnae and mothers unless extenuating circumstances warrant a waiver on that from our IEB.

Some of my fondest memories of Convention include Initiation, most especially when mothers of Alpha Gams were initiated -- and the daughters served as their "sister-moms". Today it's pretty common to see mothers standing beside their legacies on initiation day. To see a "reverse legacy" be initiated is so freaking awesome.

Holy bump! But since this thread, I sponsored my grandmother for AI and she was initiated at our convention in 2004. Talk about reverse legacy!
