Sorry for the forum crash, but I've noticed from talking to members of other GLOs that the whole "Presents" ceremony is generally a regional thing, namely from the West Coast.
I'm in Hawaii, and my Alpha Gam chapter has done the Presents Ceremony every Fall since our chartering. Kinda helps that several of our influential alums graduated from UCLA! The NMs are "presented" to the campus and Greek community. Campus officials, members of the different GLOs, and NM Parents are invited.
We held ours in the courtyard of a girls' prep school that had a long staircase. The NM was usually escorted by a member of a fraternity and her name, parents' names, and hometown were read as she walked down the staircase. This is how she was "presented" to the community. It's here that she also gets her "alum chum". Not only did our NMs get showered with attention from her big, but she also got lots more from her alum chum!
The presentation was usually followed by sandwiches and light refreshments.
