Red face Trouble Recruiting

For about 7 years, our chapter has struggled with recruitment. The girls we do get to come out to our events love us, and we have a high acceptance rate for when we do hand out bids, but we seem to have a problem getting girls to actually come to our events. We cover the campus with flyers announcing our events, and we have a wishlist that sends out e-mail updates to all the PNM's (potential new members) but our numbers are still low, and we are on the edge of getting shut down. Can anyone help?
We are currently doing informal recruitment, but formal tips will also be helpful.
THANK YOU!

1.) Search the recruitment threads here. There are many asking this exact same question.
2.) Go to Phiredup.com. Live by it.
3.) From the site, buy the book "I Heart Recruitment"
4.) Secret: Advertisements won't attract people to your events. Getting your name OUT isn't as important as getting names IN. Meet people!
5.) Don't talk about your organization! Non-Greeks don't understand what it is, and the funny letters on your shirt mean nothing to them. Have NORMAL conversations.
6.) ... and invite girls to do NORMAL things. Instead of always hosting large informal recruitment events, invite a potential member for coffee, just the two of you. It's a lot less intimidating for them than walking into a room with 10, 20, 50 people that they don't know.

And do this exercise: Have all the sisters take out a pen and paper. Give them 5-10 minutes to write down the names of every non-Greek woman on campus that they know. Even if they don't know their name, but they're "the girl I sit next to in biology who always talks to me," that's fine. You'd be amazed at how many names people write down. After that, tell everyone to take out their cell phones, and have them invite one girl on their list to lunch.. or something similar.

My chapter did this at the end of last semester. 15 sisters all made phone calls. Of those potential members that they had lunch with/went to a movie with/studied with, etc., 6 of them showed up to our recruitment events this semester.

Stop flyering. It's a waste of time and money. The majority of girls you get from flyers are only looking to join A sorority. You need girls who want to join YOUR sorority.

If you are constantly sending emails, people will get tired of hearing from you. Also, hopefully the rush chair is sending these out with the names on the bcc line - if rushees can see who else is rushing, they might see a name they don't like and be turned off.

As ASTalumna said....make it PERSONAL. Not a mailing list or a flyer.

Also - don't give up on someone's friendship just because she doesn't want to pledge - i.e. don't befriend someone just because you want her to pledge. Even if she isn't interested, she might have friends who are.

Successful recruiting comes from inviting girls you ACTUALLY KNOW.

Very few women join a sorority via informal because of a flyer or email that they get.

They join because women they already know, from class, other clubs, etc INVITED THEM.

If your sisters are involved in other things on campus, start with having them think of women they know from those clubs whom they would like see join your sorority.

Note: This is NOT INSTANTANEOUS. It is not going to work within like a week, but if you take out the time to do this and really get to connect with these women, you'll see them start to become interested in your group.

My chapter is in the same boat and already 90% of our pledges come from friends of sisters. One of the things we plan on trying is to begin hosting or co-hosting events on campus like workshops, a lecture from a much beloved professor, and participating in an event with our campus women's center. We're hoping this will help people hear our name and meet our girls in a non-Rush environment so we can build friendships and hopefully get a big pledge class during fall rush. Good luck to you!!!
