Penny Marshall Dies at 75

Laverne & Shirley was my favorite show as a '70s kid.

Not only could she act, she was one of Hollywood’s first female directors with “League of Their Own” and “Big”; she was also the first woman to direct a film grossing over $100 million. She just had a natural talent for both comedy and drama—I loved everything she starred in or directed.

I had no idea, until today, that a talented Penny Marshall directed Awakenings starring Robin Williams and Julie Kavner. I viewed the film in a theater with sisters/friends during its original release (loved it) and have watched it on tv in reruns ever since.

In high school I enjoyed watching the Laverne and Shirley tv program, but heaven knows why because viewing it since its original run makes me cringe at the writing.

In the 1970's the April Fools Day edition of a local newspaper featured page editors using fun pseudonyms, including two who used the names Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney.

And if you ever read really old college yearbooks, there are often male students/teachers named Laverne.
