Is this considered hazing?

Hi this is homecoming week at my school and we have several activities going on. There was a lip sync competition last night and several fraternities and sororities had only just their new members (pledges) on stage performing. My question is, Is that considered Hazing if only the new members were performing and there were no actives on stage with them. Because I did not think it is right to have only the new members up there with out the activities.

As I like to say, if you have to ask, it probably is. It does not sit well with me at all that new members are being singled out to participate in ANY event. While I cannot speak for other organizations, a foundation of Kappa's New Member Program is to integrate new members into all aspects of chapter life. Having them participate in any event by themselves is considered the antithesis of the existence of the New Member Program.

If a new member class decides on their own that they want to participate as a class, it's not hazing. If the class is ordered to do so, then by today's standards (requiring new members to do something the initiates aren't required to do) it could be considered hazing.

Every year on our campus Delta Chi does something called the Red Bandanna.

Every brother wears a red bandanna. Whenever anyone asks, "Why are you wearing that red bandanna?" the brother has to do something stupid -- turn around and frog jump the guy next to him, fry like bacon, whatever.

Anyway, to avoid hazing allegations, they had to do everything WITH their pledges last year -- including shaving their heads to show their solidarity.

If that's hazing on my campus I bet it is on yours too. The key seems to be if the entire chapter -- actives and all -- are participating or not.

Most likely there is a statement of your actual hazing policy somewhere in your NM manuals, officer manuals or something. Read it and see if it's applicable. Every organization has a different definition of hazing.

As part of my pledge process i too got on stage and sang with my pledge class i didnt feel like i was being hazed'. it was part of the bonding experince that a pledge class needs moments and memories that you all went threw together. although my class had to sing "um bop" BY Hanson thats just cruel and unsual punishment not hazing!!

SigChi, for the love of Christ, the thread is nearly six years old.
