Recruitment at Texas A&M?

I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with sorority recruitment at Texas A&M (College Station).

I've decided that I really want to be a part of a sorority. I've been reading the other threads and I'm just really scared that I won't receive a bid because I will be rushing as a sophomore. Also, I don't know any alumnae who could write a letter of recommendation...do they really make a difference? Also, what's considered a good GPA and is that another important factor they look for? Mine's good but isn't perfect. And what is the rush process?

Also, what is informal recruitment? And do all sororities do that?

I would think that recs are important at A&M, particularly for a sophomore. It's an opportunity to let the chapters know who you are, so it can't hurt.

Every sorority is going to have a different minimum GPA cut off. Most if not all are going to be looking for PNMs to be above that. Also be aware that if you fall below a chapter's min. GPA, you'll most likely be released by that chapter during the process.

As far as the process itself, A&M has a website that with all that info:

http://cpc.tamu.edu/recruitment

There's a page there about a Panhellenic block party in April which is designed to help girls meet sorority women. I would suggest attending that.

It appears that according to the website, there is some informal spring recruitment that goes on, but the page is under construction. Also, be aware that not every sorority is typically going to do spring recruitment. Fall recruitment gives you the chance to meet ALL the groups.

This thread is a good starting point for advice and it has an entire section devoted to recs.

Plenty of girls without Greek family members and such have managed to secure recs for the chapters at their schools, so it can be done, it just takes work.

My Little Sis's daughter is in a sorority @ A&M so I'm sure I can get answers to your questions. If you want to PM me with any specific questions or your stats, feel free. I'm almost positive that recs will be required since it's Texas, but I will confirm.

Don't worry about being a sophomore. Recruitment at A&M is somewhat competitive, especially with the more popular houses, but being a sophomore isn't a deal breaker like it can be at REALLY competitive campuses.

YES, you'll need recs!

Thanks srmom. That gives me quite a bit of hope now!

Ok. So as for getting recs...I have no links to any alumnae. How do I go about getting recs then? I looked at the panhellenic sites and I have no problem driving to meet an alumnae so that she can get to know me. But do I just find someone and contact her? Can someone fill me in on the process?

Contact the alum Panhellenic group first, and they will tell you how to proceed - different sororities may do things differently.

Contact your area Panhellenic and let them know you are planning to go through recruitment. You might search this thread first first to see if anyone has posted Panhellenic info regarding recruitment sign up.

collegegirl, are you at A&M now? If so, do you have some friends in houses? It would behoove you to get to know some girls through classes or other organizations on campus before next fall. That will greatly grease the wheels during rush.

As for recs, if you are in a town with an active panhellenic, they should be able to guide you, but the first place to start is with your family friends, friends from church, school, etc. Also, if you have some friends (and I mean more than acquaintances) in some houses at A&M, they might be able to help hook you up too.

Yes I am at A&M now. However, I don't really know any sorority girls. My roommate is in one however we're more of acquaintances since she's sooooo busy all the time. I will definitely start networking though. And although I was not super involved last semester, I will definitely become very involved this semester.

I was planning on pledging Alpha Phi Omega since they do so many service projects all the time. Would they look down upon being in another GLO during sorority recruitment?

Someone actually asked this not too long ago on GC:
