I was going to say that I have been receiving spam from that company and two other companies, one of which I hate with a passion and GCers who read my anti-this company posts know what I'm talking about. It's a darn shame when companies not only spam the world but deceive people who sign up by accessing their email lists. Perhaps these companies put that in the small print and those who sign up for these sites do not read that tiny print on those long as hell terms of services and guidelines--if they exist.

LOL. No it wasn't your imagination. I did rant on LinkedIn. But after I posted, I decided to look around again (I had some months ago), and I found that they now have a way to put your email on their "Do Not Contact" list, so I deleted my post before someone could say "But MC, it's soooo easy to put yourself on their Do Not Contact" list.
But for the record, here's what I had posted:
I hate LinkedIn. I never used it and I never will. I consider their way of doing business -- getting the email lists from everybody who signs up so that they can spam the world with invitations -- to be beyond annoying. I've set up a rule on the email app on the home computer to automatically delete anything that comes from them, and I keep reporting them as spam to our ISP, but every now and then an email slips through.
I've just never understood the business model of "We'll annoy you until you finally cave and join."

^^ That's not really LI sending the invites -- it's the members trying to build their networks by connecting their email accounts to the site.

Dear YouTube....
Stop "Processing" and post my gosh darn video.
I'm only ranting here because I know as soon as I complain somewhere it will finish and make me look silly.
But I want my video!
Whaaa!

I'm a member of the site and have never had any issues with my email contacts being spammed.
You have to go to an "Import Contacts" page and read this...
"See Who You Already Know on LinkedIn. Searching your email contacts is the easiest way to find people you already know on LinkedIn."
...before entering your email address in order for the site to send out invites to your contacts. It's probably folks not paying attention to what they're doing on the site.

FYP.
And yes, I know how it works. The emails come from LinkedIn, not from the members. And when you ignore the "invitation," it is LinkedIn that sends you friendly reminders of the awesome invitation you have received.
So, as DrPhil says, it is LI sending the invites using its members' contacts lists. And it is spam.

And it is LI counting on those people to not pay attention to what they're doing.

Isn't the Linked In email stuff just like what Facebook does too? You say you want to connect with people you already know, so it imports your contacts and starts finding them. That's what FB did when I joined...???

I don't recall fb asking for access to my contact list when I joined. If they did, I know for sure I never would have given it to them. (Of course, my desire to join fb had nothing to do with "connecting" with people already in my contacts. I'll connect with them in real life, thank you very much. I was trying to connect with people I'd lost contact with. That's still mainly what I use it for.)

Because it only accesses your contact list when you say you want to connect with your contacts and when you enter your email address into the appropriate field
I'm going to stop being a social media pusher now lol

Yes, be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.
The problem, at least for LinkedIn, is that it doesn't make clear that when it says "Do you want us to search your contacts and see who is a member," it's going to do more than just search your contact list and tell you who is a member.

That sounds like user error. I've never had any issues with it

I've been sucking at my job lately. I know it's because I know I'm leaving and I don't care anymore. I don't want to be "that guy", but I'm seriously lacking motivation.
