Ideas?

I am going to be a sophomore this fall and I was considering going through rush. I was considering these dresses for pref night http://www.promgirl.com/shop/dresses/viewitem-PD845454
http://www.lulus.com/products/space-...ess/51617.html

My question is are these dresses appropriate for pref night and also I am looking for a good place to find cocktail dresses.

I think that might depend on where your going through recruitment. The first one, for where I hang out might be a little over the top. The second one looks like what the girls wear to the bar and I personally think it is to tight and body hugging for Pref. Not at where I'm at, but I have read on here that at some schools the PNM's avoid black and white for pref dresses.

I totally agree with your assessment of both dresses. Pref night means something pretty, classic, and tasteful. Think nice pastels or brights; solid or small print. Flowy material is better than tight and short. You are dressing for the girls, not guys. This is a semi-formal event and you want to look your conservative best. If in doubt, choose a simple dress and accessorize with jewelry.

Stay off prom sites and away from any dress described as "body-con."

Try here instead (but not the long gowns):

Check out ModCloth--cute dresses, nice quality, and in your price range. www.modcloth.com

Also Vestique www.vestique.com

Depending on your school and the level of formality, different dresses may be appropriate. Stay away from anything skin tight or too poofy!

Do you have a TJMaxx or Marshall's near you? They often have great stuff at reasonable prices.

Also, try http://www.adabelles.com. They actually have a section just for sorority recruitment as well as occassion sections. Their prices are very reasonable. They have some nice classic shapes and styles, in solid colors. If you just add a silver belt and nice accessories, they would be great for pref. Simple elegance and sophistication don't have to be expensive.

Another option is http://www.francescascollections.com. (They also have local boutiques.) Some of their dresses are more casual, but again, add the right accessories and heels, and you'll be good to go!

It looks like the type of dress that a) doesn't look good on every body type and b) may not be long enough depending on your height. The material also doesn't look great quality and may wrinkle easily, which would be terrible.

Try taking a look at some of the websites people have recommended. See if you can find something in a more classic style (that you'll wear again) rather than going for a prom-like style. We know that it's hard to get out of that mindset if prom dresses are the only formal dresses you've had to shop for!

Try TJMaxx and Marshall's as DBB suggested, or your local Macy's. If Macy's is having a sale plus coupons they are often way cheaper than you'd think and the quality will be a lot better.

Gingerdeltaz - that Adabelle's site has some ADORABLE things. Do they have a brick & mortar store or are they just online?

They are just online. We were a little concerned about our first order, especially since the sizes are just S, M, and L, but they fit my daughter very well.

lulus.com has notoriously short dresses, fyi. Go to a store where you can try things on, you'll most likely be happier in the end. I've found lovely dresses at Marshalls for only 20 bucks! Good luck

Just remember if you are wearing a strapless, one shoulder or spaghetti strap-type dress that the fit on the top has to be exactly right, and don't skimp on the undergarments. That Lulu dress is too short at the bottom and WAY too short on top. That model, probably quite tall, would be falling out of that dress in no time flat.

And don't forget "vintage." If you live in a larger city, you can probably find some great things in thrift stores. You just have to be patient because you probably won't hit gold on your first visit to your first store.

Good luck, and good for you for not outspending your budget. You can spend less, you just have to work harder to do it.

Are any of these dresses close to what may be appropriate? Sorry there are so many. I've looked on the suggested sites. I also do not have a marshalls or macy's locally. Thank you for your help.
