National HQs ban sorority members from fraternity bid night parties at U. Va.

This is really interesting. Several national HQs have banned their members from attending "Boys' Bid Night" at University of Virginia. Teen-age foot stomping follows.

I think it's a good idea, despite the members' pique.

I noticed that the NPC made a post about this on facebook- do sorority members usually attend the fraternity bid days? It is a foreign concept to me, but I figured it must be a bigger thing than I realised for them to comment on it

This is being discussed in the other UVA thread.

Apparently the sororities go from fraternity to fraternity kind of like a progressive dinner, which to me sounds like a much better and safer idea than having a paired function.

The NPC groups REALLY f'ed up on this one. They used the "no participating in men's rush" excuse - when that is usually applied to wonen wearing letters, being hostesses etc. They're stretching it to fit the situation and being called on it, rightly so. #1 they should have been aware this was happening rather than make a last minute dictate; #2, will this apply at all schools now? If so, it'll accomplish nothing but delayed parties.

I thought NPC groups had learned from the DePauw DZ mess that upsetting women who pride themselves on being intelligent and independent is Bad Idea Jeans.

While I'm not jazzed by her use of extraneous apostrophes, it's a good read, and something to think about.

I had read the letter yesterday (a Sigma Chi brother had posted it on his FB page).

I am not trying to get into any disagreements with NPC (some of you know why), but I was surprised to read "No alumna can be involved" in fraternity recruitment. Is this correct?

I can understand the reasoning behind not allowing actives to participate: but to tell graduated women that they can't be involved? And, in this case, to threaten to punish an undergrad chapter over an alumna's actions? I'm at a loss.

btw- I'd feel this way whether Sigma Chi was involved or not.

In for a penny, in for a pound thought: If the national leaders of the UVA organizations had said to the undergrad chapters, "We want to talk to you all about fraternity bid night. We have some concerns" ahead of time, instead of a blanket ban that (to my knowledge) did not have any discussions with the undergraduate members, it probably would have went over better.
