Plastic is much easier to carry.

And as was stated earlier make GREAT linings for bathroom garbage cans!

Paper tends to burst after a moment of pressure.

I use them for trash can liners and to clean the cats' litterbox. (my little divas)

For purchases: I use paper.
For bags: I prefer plastic. After I come home and put the groceries away, I can use the plastic bags as liners for my bathroom trash can.
