I watched last night's episode (Kelly Clarkson, for those who didn't know). I was happy that her mother had already started researching prior to the show. From there, though... If I didn't know better, I would have thought that I would have to actually visit Georgia and Andersonville to get information. There is so much reciprocity among genealogical sources, it's really not necessary! Is it cool to see where your ancestors were? Of course! But that needs to be stressed, not that you have to go to each place! Not everyone has the option to pick up and fly to another state to get information - even if it is hand fed to the celebrity.

[/vent]

Other than that, the honeychile household was absolutely hysterical over the advertisement for (the genealogy-happy LDS) Sister Wives!! Can't wait for next week & Christina Applegate's story!

I thought it was great that her mom started researching also!

As an aside, my mom just came back from my our family reunion - maternal side. My mom is the 2nd oldest living member (at 90) that attended. The best gift mom brought home was a printed family tree, that she had corrected while she was attending. The person who made them had to re-print them but was happy to do so. My mom pointed out errors (missing people) and it turns out that they had to add about 10 people.

The episode i saw tonight ( don't know if it a rerun or not) with Christina Applegate and her father was tender, sad, and very human. What a lovely woman she is! I love this show, as it gives people some great tips in how to get started.

This seriously thrills me! I absolutely love it when one of our elders is sharp enough to get involved at their age! Sadly, I may soon be the eldest one interested in my family.

So glad you liked it! I was disappointed at first, as she was only going back two generations, but wow! What a wonderful gift she was able to give to her father!

We missed the first five minutes, so I don't know what was said then. I did keep yelling, "Check the death records first, not divorce records!"

Sharp as a tack she is! If you ever met her, you'd never think she was 90. Maybe late 60's?

You being the eldest is a great task, I think you'll do well.

Christina Applegate: I just lost it at the end. I started going downhill when she was explaining to her dad about everything she found. When they were in the cemetery office, reading the cards and dad & Christina realized grandma bought the plot, I felt it coming on. As they were standing over the grave, I was saying to myself "I hope that they can get a marker for her". 3 months later, beautiful marker. ----->NinjaPoodle

I'm watching Chelsea Handler right now.

Terribly interesting! It would have been even better if my DH hadn't been drooling over Zoe so much!

Cindy Crawford's lineage got to me! I know that I'll never, ever be able to go anywhere NEAR as far back as she, because I seriously doubt that I come from the type of person who was mentioned in old books & documents. I'm not going to ruin the surprise (and a huge surprise it is!) for anyone.

The show did, however, give me a push to look up a line I haven't bothered in a while - and may have pay dirt! Here's the fun part: I have an ancestor who changed the spelling of her maiden name like some people change their underguccis! We've looked under Challis/Chelis/Chellis/Chalice/Shallis etc, etc, and I tried a new way of searching. Believe it or not, the name just may be CHILES. What a hoot that would be, with my honeychile screen name!

How are you doing, NP?

That's pretty awesome she was able to trace that far back.

While I was originally searching, I came across name changes/spellings. Makes the search more interesting in that you have to remember names had different spellings.

I haven't been looking recently. I just don't have the time. I need to look/find slave manifests or journals, roosters or what I can find. It's really time consuming and costs $$. I'll figure out something.

Out of curiosity, have you subscribed to the Slave Dwelling Project page on Facebook? Terribly intriguing!

There are at least seven current spellings of our family name in branches of our tree around the United States. Makes one want to visit new places in our great country simply to possibly meet another member of one's far-flung family.
