I think it's so sad that Zeta's Alpha chapter closed!

And last I heard, Frostburg State University was considering shutting down. Are all the NPC chapters you listed really colonizing there? Any info on that?

Yes. Phi Mu and ASA will in fact be colonizing at Frostburg.

As in the entire school is shutting down? What would be the reason for that? I grew up in MD and my high school always sent a decent amount people to Frostburg, which was over 2 hours away. I've never heard they had a problem with numbers.

Penn's Panhellenic Votes "No" on Extension

An article in the Sept. 10 '09 Daily Pennsylvanian reports:

http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian....767221.shtml#5

Excerpts:

. . . Last night, in a simple majority vote, the presidents of Penn's eight sororities voted against extension, the process that would introduce another chapter of a National Panhellenic Conference sorority to Penn's Greek community.

. . . The possibility of adding a chapter arose after last year's higher-than-usual recruitment numbers and increased interest in the Greek system, according to Stacy Kraus, associate director of programming at the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and the primary advisor for the Panhellenic Council.

Kraus explained that when considering extension, the Panhellenic Council looked at statistics to guide its decision process. These include numbers like female enrollment at the University, recruitment statistics and Panhellenic membership statistics.

The average chapter size of a sorority at Penn is 147 members - a number that has increased over the years leading up to the recent extension discussion.

The Panhellenic Council has not added a new sorority since the colonization of Sigma Kappa in 2002. . . .

I thiiiiink Boston University is open for expansion, but don't hate me if I'm wrong about that. Not sure if it was mentioned on here, but I don't think so.

(I know, I know. Super reliable source, right?)

Tri-Delta kicked off their colonization efforts at Towson last night during Open House night. They had a few alumnae show a video and speak about Delta Delta Delta. I spied a tiny bit. The room looked nice with candy covered tables and balloons in their colors. AOIIs immediate past president is the new Greek Life assistant. She says that there is really good buzz about them on campus. Greek Life is having to work hard to keep women from dropping out of recruitment instead of just waiting to go through for Tri Delt.

ATO Expelled from House and MIT

http://tech.mit.edu/V129/N35/ato.html

Excerpts from ^ article in The Tech online:

Appeal Denied to ATO; Fraternity Is Expelled From House and MIT
By Jeff Guo
NEWS EDITOR
September 11, 2009
The Alpha Tau Omega fraternity lost its appeal and has been expelled from MIT, the Interfraternity Council announced yesterday.

ATO is no longer a recognized fraternity at MIT and will shutter its chapter house . . . . The brothers living in the house will work with the administration to find room in dorms or off-campus, ATO President DeRon M. Brown ’10 said in an e-mail.

The MIT chapter is still recognized by its national organization, Brown said.

All of ATO’s finances will be turned over to its alumni group, which still owns the house. It is unclear what the house will be now be used for.

For the past two weeks, ATO had been in limbo. On August 27, the IFC Judicial Committee ruled to expel ATO after finding it had committed too many violations of IFC rules. The violations included those from a May 9 incident during which the fraternity alledgedly provided alcohol to a minor and failed to request medical assistance when necessary.

ATO appealed on Sept. 4 to the Office of Student Citizenship . . . .

Yesterday, David Kennedy of the Office of Student Citizenship ruled that there were insufficient grounds for an appeal, and that the expulsion stands.

Since August 2008, ATO had been on a “One-and-Done” point system: The fraternity would be expelled from MIT after the point values of its violations over a year reached one “point.”

Phi Kappa Sigma Regains Charter and House at Texas Christian

http://media.www.tcudailyskiff.com/m...-3768815.shtml

Excerpts from story in TCU'c campus paper:

Phi Kap regains house and charter after suspension
Andrea Bolt
Issue date: 9/11/09 Section: News

The university's Beta Theta chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma has not only regained its house and its charter after being suspended during the 2008-2009 academic year, but also won significant awards, the fraternity's president said.

Senior history major and Phi Kappa Sigma president Austin Alexander said the misconduct that caused the fraternity to lose its house included multiple alcohol violations and breaking university policies as well as its own fraternal policies, including alcohol consumption in the fraternity's chapter room.

. . . Brewer said on behalf of the alumni that they were proud and excited about the accolades the Beta Theta chapter had received. . . .

. . . Evan Berlin, president of the Interfraternity Council, said he was continuously impressed by the entire chapter in its successful philanthropy efforts despite its lack of a house or charter last year.

"They also had an extremely successful rush this year," Berlin said, referring to Phi Kappa Sigma's 29 new pledge class members.
