Spinning violently out of control as he fell toward Earth and an almost-certain death at hundreds of miles per hour, skydiver Michael Holmes had a split second to consider his demise when his parachute and a reserve failed high above New Zealand in December.

“Oh, [expletive]! I'm dead. Bye,” said Holmes, who landed in a bush and lived to tell about it in an exclusive interview on TODAY on Monday

BON, this does happen more than one thinks it does.
Check some of these stories out:
Free Fallers The Free Fallers are the most amazing stories of all. They didn't deploy a parachute. They didn't cling to aircraft wreckage. They just fell. All were World War II airmen. Lt. I.M. Chisov, Sgt. Alan Magee, and Sgt. Nicholas Alkemade all fell at least 18,000 feet.

Wreckage Riders Another group of survivors are ones who stayed with the wreckage of a destroyed aircraft. This group includes the most famous survivor, Vesna Vulovic, who fell from the greatest height of any person whose story is recorded on this site.

Unlucky Skydivers This group is made up of people who were both lucky and unlucky at the same time. Their bad luck was in having parachutes that failed. Their good luck was in somehow surviving nonetheless. There are a lot of these stories. Part of the reason for that is that in the majority of these cases the parachute came out, it just didn't fully open. Such a streaming parachute does slow a skydiver to some extent. So instead of hitting the ground at 120 miles per hour, maybe they hit it at 40, 60, or 80 miles per hour. Since there are so many of these stories, we'll only describe a few examples here, which are either particularly well documented or have some interesting aspect.

Other Amazing Stories A number of the stories don't fit into any of the previously described categories, but they are amazing nonetheless, so we will discuss them here.

Jon,

After reading these accounts I am going to have to take back every negative comment I made about Rambo jumping off the cliff in First Blood. I was so sure it was impossible

Maybe I should send Stallone a letter . . .
