"house max" definition

i go to a school that doesn't allow greek housing. but i'm looking into transferring and on one of the school's greek life website, they list the chapters and their "house max" number. they're all either 8 or 9, and that seems extremely low if a house max is the number of people each house will hold. so i'm assuming that's not what "house max" means. so what does it mean??

Depending on the school, that may be what "house max" means. There are a couple schools I know of who have small houses that only sleep a small number of girls (like 8-10). Usually in that case, the houses are mainly used for meetings and only the Exec Board members live in.

I honestly can't think of what else it could mean.
