It would be quite an investment to develop a custom forum system just for GC. Never say never, though. So, who knows, maybe some day in the future it makes sense to consider possibly doing that. But for now, we'll be going with already existing forum software, just not sure which one yet.
Whatever forum software I end up using on GC, it will be modifyable. I probably won't modify it too much, though, just some small modifications (at least initially). More modifications usually results in upgrades becoming more complex, which I might want to minimize.

For testing out new forum software I would just setup a second website for that separate from GC. Probably on a subdomain of GC, something like testing.greekchat.com . GC wouldn't change during the testing period, everything here would be the same as always.
Limiting this to anyone who chipped in via the coffee website, moderators & premium members is mainly just to make it easier for me to manage. And in a way it kinda makes sense to give contributors a bit more say in the process and a chance to preview the potential "new GC."

There are actually still a few GC premium members. I think the number is 5, or very close to that. At the peak there were maybe somewhere around 25 or so GCers with premium memberships. Not too much came with it for the most part. Back when ads were running on GC there was an option to turn them off. Also premium memberships could upload avatars & profile photos. Basically, though, it was a way for those who wanted to help support GC to do so. When I setup the chip-in coffee site I did that instead of promoting the premium memberships again since the site software would be changing before long, so didn't want add any more complexity to changing the forum software.
