Question about missing a recruitment event

One of my chapter sister's has a wedding on the day of our pref ceremony. The girl getting married is an alumna that alot of the older active members don't like. The girl going gave her excuse for recruitment at the beginning of summer. Now, with recruitment being a little over a week away they are telling her she can't go to the wedding or she'll be fined, and that it has to be approved through the AAC. How do other chapters deal with things like this? Do you guys have to get approval for this? We never have before. Things like illness, bereavement and weddings have always been excused before, but now they want to change it without the chapter voting on it.

Don't get me wrong...I really love my chapter, but I think that things were very strict when it came to recruitment. If you got sick and couldn't make it, it would only be excused if it was like a surgery on the sister. Our final rounds of recruitment are the first week of January. So, that means that all sororities and PNM's must come back to school a week earlier than everyone else. If you had a family vacation, the girl better figure it out so that she could be at recruitment or she would be fined. Same with flight plans...we had to be in the house by 5pm on a certain day or get fined. And, the fines were not cheap...running anywhere from $100 to $150 per day missed. I understand that we really needed our girls to be there, but what if some wild family emergency came up over break that...would the girl get fined if she couldn't make it due to that? That is what always scared me.

Well, firstly it shouldn't matter that a lot of people don't like this person(bride) if the girl(member) who wants to go had her excuse turned in on time and it was approved back then. Any excuse for recruitment for my chapter back in the day needed to be approved by the CR/AAC and the only excuses were death, hospitalization, or class (as our recruitment started on Friday and some girls had friday classes). I'm sure there are exceptions to every rule, and wild family emergencies happen, but a wedding is pre-planned (how crazy of a fellow sister to plan her wedding during recruitment!) and again if she was previously approved fine, bit if she assumed that turning in an excuse gets her approved then she is wrong. It depends on the chapter bylaws.

Well, the university moved our recruitment up by 2 weeks. The last few years it has always been the second week of september, starting after labor day, this year though, it's the first week of school. The girls wedding has been planned for almost a year, but we didn't find out when recruitment was until I believe March.

I am that girl--- I did get heavily fined ( I am going have to work most of it off--- maybe, I talked to our CNS who talked to the CR advisor, who was not present at the CR meeting-- the ruling may be overturned by a technicality!), while recruitment is extremely vital, I felt that the wedding has a higher significance on my priority list (being that she is our sister, and alumna, and I am the AR chair and the wedding being planned almost 2 years in advance)... There is a double standard at this chapter and I got caught in the middle of it, because another sister of ours had a "wedding"(rumor has it that she went to a concert) that same night and was not fined... How strange how things work out huh?????
