Still waiting for an announcement regarding ours in Dallas late June, but they never opened registration.

This past week, my mom tested positive for coronavirus. Fortunately, she only has mild symptoms - slightly elevated temperature, on-and-off aches and pains, and exhaustion. I video chatted with her last night and she's in good spirits. My stepdad hasn't experienced any symptoms yet and he's keeping his distance.

I keep hearing mixed messages about the availability of tests. My mom had a relatively easy time (in Summit, NJ), so I'm thinking it's very regional. Does anyone have any info or first-hand experience with people either getting tested or denied, and if so, where?

My mom posted this on Facebook on Friday:

Quote:
I just found out I have the Coronavirus. My symptoms for the last two days have been fairly mild. I thought I would tell you all what I experienced so you have an idea of what to expect. Hopefully, you don’t have to worry about it.
I had been taking my temperature for over a week as a precaution. It was in the normal range, never going above 98.6. On Wednesday afternoon I started feeling muscle aches in various parts of my body. Around dinner, I took my temperature and it was 99.5. The temperature and body aches ebb and flow - the body aches feel like you feel the next day after a workout. I called my doctor’s office Thursday morning. They said to go to urgent care to be tested.
I arrived at the door of urgent care where someone stood there and gave me a mask, squirted sanitizer on my hands, took the information about my symptoms and my phone #. They told me to wait in my car until they called. 10 minutes later a person called and told me to go to a temporary tent they had set up in the parking lot. In there they took my vitals, listened to my breathing and did the nose swab. I honestly thought the nose swab was going to be much more invasive than it was - it was nothing. The doctor and nurse were extremely helpful and professional.

From the time I arrived at the door of urgent care, until I left was no more than 30 minutes.

They told me that first, they would test for the flu. If the flu test came back positive, they would not test for the virus. They would call me if the flu was yes, or post my results on line if it was negative. Two and a half hours later, my flu results were posted as negative (very fast). They told me it would be 5 to 7 days until I would hear about the Coronavirus results. Instead, I received the news by phone around 4:45 today. I was shocked to be getting a call so quickly!

At this time, my symptoms are body aches, slight fever, and tiredness. I logged on and worked from home all day today which shows you I am feeling well enough to do so.

I want to thank Summit Medical Group’s Urgent Care team for being so professional and quick in providing my results. I know that is not happening for everyone so I am grateful.

My prayers to your mom, sincerely.

Today, I joined my Quaker community for Meeting for Worship over Zoom. It was quite powerful and had nearly 100 attendees. Some people delivered messages about the pandemic, but we mostly worshiped in silence.

I live in NJ, and the Governor has been busting his ass to get more testing available. It’s state by state. My cousin is in Atlanta and her son has a fever...they’re basically refusing to test anyone who hasn’t either traveled from certain countries or lived with someone who tested positive.

I have to say, I’m very happy with the way Governor Murphy (and my mayor, Ras Baraka) are handling this.

I will say a prayer for your family!

Keeping your mother in my prayers ASTalumna06. How kind and thoughtful that your mother shared her experience with others, so that they might know what to look for too.

Yes, I'm really appreciative of people who have had it talking about it. I have very bad health anxiety - I'm terrified of getting colds and flus - so this has been hard. Hearing people say what it's been like helps me prepare and bring down my anxiety.

Hope mom and step dad do ok.

The media like to hype the "disaster" scenario. Like your experience, I know people that have tested and it was basically uneventful. They are usually feeling much better by the time the result get back.

There is also a line of thought that you shouldn't get tested if you have only mild "flu like" symptoms. Why? Because you're going into an infected area. Something like 90% of the test are coming back negative. So is it worth it? Each person should make their own choice depending on what makes them most comfortable. Good luck to all.

Western Michigan has now "postponed" graduation. I'm hoping that means they'll let these folks walk eventually. My son was laid off from his grad assistantship but is getting two more pay checks and there is no effect on his tuition. He's sad though. He has a signed a contract to continue working at Western after graduation but he doesn't know if that will happen now.

Nothing on ours yet. It's the first time in a long time I didn't plan on going anyway. It's in Phoenix this year.

I hope things stay mild for your mom and that your stepdad doesn't get any symptoms. Getting tested in Michigan is not that simple. They still will not test you if you have not had known contact with someone who has tested positive. I know people turned away with all the symptoms. If you aren't sick enough to be hospitalized, you're not getting tested. There aren't enough tests. Michigan can be added to the list of states on lockdown now.

I think they're up to 7 Detroit police officers tested positive with over 200 in self quarantine. That's the kind of thing that gets really scary very quickly.
