I know its really bad taste to straight up ASK for money, but I figure if I only register for a small amount, the procrastinators will just give us a check lol...sorry if this comes off tacky I realllllllllly dislike this subject!
You're going to face the danger of receiving a lot of crap you don't want if you only register for a few things. A lot of crap that doesn't come with a gift receipt.

Take a look around, there's always a need for some new stuff- towels, sheets, glassware, cookware.

You'll still get a lot of checks/cash, but some people are hell bent on buying an actual gift. Better to get something you'll like than something hideous and nonreturnable!

You can also register for tools and such at Home Depot or Sears to supplement your traditional registry.

There are also websites that let people purchase parts of your honeymoon for you. They can give you a room upgrade, or snorkeling lessons, or whatever.
http://www.honeymoonwishes.com/ is one of the ones I've heard of.

An acquaintance of mine is planning her wedding and just posted on facebook about how they went to look at this venue (a venue that my fiance and I have been considering), and how it is already almost completely booked through 2012. Now my fiance is FREAKING OUT about how we haven't done anything except talk about colors. Total groomzilla, and we have until 2013!

^^^I think having colors is a pretty big accomplishment for a 2012 wedding.

I've been helping my cousin plan her wedding for December 2011. Since they have been engaged (in June), they have changed colors 4 or 5 times. And it's not like adding or subtracting an accent color, they're switching to COMPLETELY different colors.

2011 is almost here and it's time to start getting some concrete ideas going (for decor, centerpieces, etc) and it's hard to help with that when you can't pick a color scheme.

I blame the bridal maganzines. Seriously, every color change email/phone convo starts with "well I was looking in a magazine and I saw..." Put the magazines down and STOP looking. lol.

Reading this kind of stuff scares the crap out of me. I imagine I'll probably get married some day but...holy cow!

The older I get the less I care about these details. I planned one wedding that thankfully didn't happen, and really, all of that stuff isn't as important as building a healthy adult relationship based on mutual trust and respect. If I get married I'll probably wear my bunad, have good food and beverages, a small bouquet, maybe one attendant and possibly a nephew as a ring bearer, and maybe a tomte or nisse couple to give as favors for good luck to put in their houses, or paper woven hearts with candy and cookies.

Though I have all intentions of have a Marshalltown trowel engraved to cut and serve the kransekake with because that's just who I am. I could also probably swing an entrance and exit via dog sled, but that's pushing it.

Not making your wishes known = lots of Precious Moments wedding statues, picture frames, and anything else kitschy. Who can't use a few extra towels or linen sets?

ROTFL. Hahahaha, too true!

Does anyone have ideas for venues besides churches or hotels?

Yea! That's good news.

Fiance came to visit last weekend and I caught him flipping through all the bridal stuff.

He's been really helpful: I'm so thankful.

Did anyone have an engagement party? We're having one during the holidays, since we are both away at school, as a chance for our families to meet. (BTW, the bottom of the invitation states in lovely, obvious font "Your presence is our only gift".) I've had family members on my side tell me that "No one has an engagement party" or that we're "being selfish".

Did we do something wrong?

Gardens, parks, restaurants, museums, community centers, the VFW club (no joke - the VFW in my hometown is gorgeous and practically everyone either has both ceremony and reception or just reception there). Any private club that has a "club house."

Auditoriums, historical buildings, porches, "wedding places" whose sole purpose is to provide a wedding "experience."

Golf courses, country clubs...

I've been to at least one wedding in each of these types of venues.
