Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Hosts Author and Essayist Marita Golden At 2005 Debutante Cotillion

Washington, D.C. – On November 13, 2005, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and its non-profit entity, Women of the Dove Foundation, will host its bi-annual debutante cotillion, featuring renowned writer and anthropologist, Marita Golden. The sorority will present a dozen young women from the Metropolitan Washington community during this black-tie gala event.

Ms. Golden, who will serve as mistress of ceremonies, is the author of Don’t Play in the Sun, a hard-hitting meditation on the role that color plays among African Americans. A distinguished novelist, essayist, teacher of writing and literary institution builder, Ms. Golden founded the Washington-D.C. based African American Writers Guild. Since 1990 she has headed the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation, which presents the nation's only national fiction award for college writers of African descent and an annual summer writer's workshop for Black writers, Hurston/Wright Writers' Week, as well as the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for published Black writers.

During the five-month rites of passage program, debutantes attend enrichment workshops covering such topics as academic achievement, self-esteem and motivation, peer pressure, body image, and proper etiquette. The sorority strongly encourages family participation throughout the program. Together with their families, the debutantes have attended family events including a mother-daughter tea, a father-daughter outing, and participated in a monthly community service project with the Dinner Program for Homeless Women in Washington, D.C.

Additionally, the debutante program provides an opportunity for the young ladies to raise scholarship money for college. After a long journey of learning and Sunday waltz classes, the debutantes will showcase their achievements at the White Rose Cotillion and at the end of the evening one lucky young lady will be crowned the 2005 White Rose Queen of the Debutantes.

The cotillion will be held at 6:00 p.m. on November 13, 2005 at the Georgetown University Conference Center, 3800 Reservoir Road, NW Washington, D.C. Tickets are $60.00 and tax deductible. Proceeds will benefit the Women of the Dove Foundation’s scholarship and community outreach programs. To purchase tickets, please contact the 2005 White Rose Cotillion hotline at (301) 871-8130.
