Here is what I heard from my friend's daughter that just graduated from UGA this past Spring and lived in the Gamma Phi Beta house her sophomore year:

Her daughter shared this from their website:

Our beautiful house was built in 1905 by Charles Phinizy as a gift to his wife. The house was then rented out to many other fraternities and sororities until Gamma Phi Beta purchased it in 1983. The house has undergone many changes throughout the years, but all the foyer woodwork and trim, pocket doors, chandelier and beveled glass fanlight are original.

She thinks they might have purchased it from Sig Ep. She also added the following information about the original home: The doorknobs are so low on the original doors because his wife was so short and the glass on the original windows is prism glass because she liked rainbows.

2. Another AxiD question... If one were to look up all Alpha Xi Chapters in the US they would notice many, many closures at big colleges, especially around the 70's and 80's. IS there a particular reason for this anyone knows of??
Thanks so much!!!
The closures in the 70's and into the 80's were backlash from the student unrest of the 1960's: hippies, peaceniks, radicalism, and nonconformity. Big universities were more likely to have that unrest than smaller state colleges. Strong chapters were able to weather the storm. If a chapter had a large senior class graduate and the next fall's rush/recruitment registration was down it was hard to recoup the numbers.

One example: in 1970 quota/total at Mizzou was 34. In 1971 quota was 23 -- there were that many fewer PNMs. Registration was a bit higher in 1972 and 1973. IIRC, in 1973 (when I was PH president) we had 620 register and we set quota at 38.
