FWIW, I love, love, love the idea of several smaller wedding cakes. The sticker shock, however, almost put me in a coma...

I hear ya. Honestly, I'd just run to my local baker and grab something off the shelf but I know most people buying wedding cakes won't or can't do that. If I had to order something though, more than likely, it wouldn't be "bridal" looking and I wouldn't say it's for a wedding. That word alone will jack up the price.

We found a place that was very reasonable (esp when I heard that most places charge at least $10/slice!) - the cake ended up being the least expensive of wedding items! It wasn't exactly what I wanted (read: language communication problem), but it tasted wonderful!

I was just grateful that the bakery I used didn't use fondant on their cakes. Blech.

Ours was pretty plain - golden yellow cake, chocolate mousse filling, white buttercream icing. It had four tiers, and the icing looked like fondant but was buttercream. A ribbon matching the bridesmaids' blue was around the bottom of each tier, with "pearls" on either side. There was a magnolia at the top.

What I had wanted was a flurry of snowflakes, whoosing from the top to the bottom of the cake, but even though the cake decorator spoke Russian, she must not have figured out snowflakes. Believe or not, we STILL do not have our pictures - it's been 19 months! - or I'd post a picture.

That's what we did. Chocolate mud cake with chocolate buttercream filling, and chocolate icing - definitely didn't look like a wedding cake - but it was delicious.
