Sorority suspended for "Indian Party."
Gamma Phi Beta has been temporarily suspended for a party in which people dressed as Indians and wore "red face."

It's interesting that it took this long to happen.

What makes this any different than the huge response we've had over the years of people wearing blackface to parties?
As a person of Indian heritage (Cherokees don't use the "Native American" label constantly) I don't feel particularly offended.
But I'll bet some do.

I don't think 'being offensive' is something anyone should ever be punished by a government entity for.
Those 10 students or whatever should feel free to picket the Gamma Phi Beta house or whatever it is they want to do, but using the school to discipline them for 'offensive' conduct is beyond the pale and possibly unconstitutional.

OK.
Weren't the chapters who held parties where people showed up in blackface disciplined by their schools as well?
Frankly, I'm just astounded this hasn't come up before.

you have to understand that there's even more to the UND issue. the school has been fighting for years to keep the nickname "the fighting sioux" and the local tribes have been against it saying that it was degrading, so this just added to all the turmoil.

That's not at all the same thing.
I guess Italians and Greeks are going to be whining about toga parties next.

Why would Greeks be whining about toga parties? Togas are Roman, not Greek.

And last I heard they hadn't been rounded up on reservations in their native lands.

It wasn't yesterday - if you check the date, it was the end of March. And yes, that is a long time from the time of the party in November. We've discussed this before in another thread.

Not making a comment about the implications of the party, but I thought that one of the responses to the article was kind of funny -
Using this logic, I guess we should get rid of Halloween.
When my kids were little, they dressed up as Indians all the time. You can buy cheap Indian gear at Party City and any toy store. I guess they should make those things unavailable.
If they took away the source for feather headresses, I doubt people would start killing birds to make them. If they did, that would open up a whole new can of worms...
