Alumna Research

Hi all,

I'm doing some geneology research, and I think my grandmother was a member of a sorority at UT back in the 1930s. Is there a way I can find this out? Do sororities keep records this long? Appreciate any help you can provide!

If you tell us which sorority it was, an initiated member of that sorority might be able to look up your grandmother in their membership database.

Thanks for replies, everyone! Unfortunately I don't know which one. Was hoping there would be some sort of Panhellenic database.

If you PM me her name (First, middle and maiden), I will check Theta's website for you. Your best bet might just be process of elimination.

Does UT (whichever one it is) have their yearbooks online? You might want to try looking at the sorority pictures there.

If you're thinking of InCircle, Theta stopped using it months ago because it couldn't be updated (e.g. members resigned. were terminated, or died but were still listed as members). There was an announcement about this and supposedly Theta is going to roll out something else. Still waiting on that.

Best bet is for the OP to contact HQ directly with an inquiry re: a member's status.

It appears from the UT website that the Briscoe Center for American History has copies of all Cactus editions available for library use only. I would imagine you could call and ask if they can check the years she was in attendance.

I just figured this out the hard way. (Searching our site). Poop. I wish they would have kept In Circle alive until the Sister Search was up and running.

To restrict your search to the Sororities/Women's Fraternities on campus at that time. look at the listings created by user Irishpipes at this link below. The schools are sorted by state and then name. Each school has a listing of the chapters that are/were at the school.

A pay site called E-Yearbook.com has Texas Cactuses (Cacti?) going back to 1894. It's $4.95 for a one-month subscription -- might not hurt to look there.
