This may be/probably is true. But the cost of restarting the unit would be so high that the CW decided to cut its losses for a show it was probably going to cancel anyway.
Personally, I'm really outraged. Sure, the show had gone downhill but I still think it's better/more intelligent than most of the sitcoms on TV. I've actually only gotten into the show recently--my boyfriend started watching it in syndication and then we bought the first season on DVD (they're up to season 3 now).
There is talk that they will have a season finale that's a "clip" show with famous moments. And with some narration and reflection by the actors and producers on the show. To me, it's just not the same. These characters deserve closure. Especially the Joan/Aaron plotline!!!!
It ticks me off a lot. To take one example, Gilmore Girls was cruddy in its last season--more cruddy IMO than Girlfriends has ever been. Now, granted, I don't know the relative ratings, but imagine the outrage if GG hadn't gotten a finale. I honestly find the CW's treatment of the former UPN shows (and not just the African American ones--Veronica Mars too, for example) to be a load of crap.
