Ole Miss Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment 2013

Check Here Back For Updates (to this post and additions to the thread.)

Registration for Fall Formal Recruitment (Sorority Rush) - Panhellenic Recruitment Registration Opens on May 15, 2013 and closes on September 9, 2013.

Ice Water Teas - Sunday, September 8, 2013 [THIS IS A NEW DATE!]

C.A.R.E. Walk - THURSDAY, September 26, 2013 - an annual event hosted by the Panhellenic Council for which the proceeds benefit breast cancer research. (day of week corrected.)

Panhellenic Convocation - Sunday, September 29, 2013

Recruitment Week - Monday, September 30 to Sunday 6, 2013

There is no minimum grade to participate but potential new members should know that virtually all of the Chapters on campus require a 3.0 GPA (as a minimum, if not more) to carry the PNM through to Preference Party.

This is a competitive recruitment campus and Letters of Reference and Recommendations should be considered to be necessary. Some folks suggest two recs per Chapter as a minimum.

I am so excited to follow this thread this year as a mom of an active instead of a PNM. (I'm hoping it will be less stressful. Although, I'm just now starting to understand how incredibly hard the sororities at Ole Miss work on their recruitment.)

Anyway...for any PNM's for 2013, I have to say that the ladies of GreekChat provide amazing insight and advice. They are a fabulous resource. Use them wisely.

If you don't like being told what to do it probably isn't for you. It takes a lot of work to keep a Chapter running. You will be expected to pitch in and help.

If you don't have good morals and values it probably isn't the place for you. We hold our women to high standards [and high grades]. If you don't have high standards you will be [called] into standards [for review].

Sorority life is expensive, however, if you break it down by events and things your getting with your dues it is a bargain.

You will grow more then you ever thought you would with sorority life. It is a life changing experience.

You will be an ace interviewer when you go out to get a job. After doing formal recruitment for 4 years you will be able to talk to any body. Recruitment is like a job interview.

Greeks tend to hire Greeks. There are a lot of us out there in a position to hire and network. I would hire a Greek- especially one that held offices over a non Greek all day long.
Borrowed from another thread because this makes excellent points for PNMs.

Congratulations to Alpha Delta Pi! Just out of curious what has been decided about a location for a house for you? Remodel the old or a new house? I remember somewhere that reading there were lots across from some of the houses near the dorms.

The new lot is supposed to be located across from the Theta House. This site will destroy some parking that I do not expect the University will replace. See this map:

Hello! Parents of an Ole Miss PNM checking in with 2 quick questions. 1) Does UM have a Panhellenic preview weekend like the one at UA? and 2) Have dates for the other parties been set? Isn't there somewhat of a lag between ice water teas and other rounds?

Ole Miss does not currently have a preview weekend like UA, but Greek Life in the past has had a table at orientation sessions for Freshmen and parents. Greek Life (link in first post) invites parents with questions to call their office. There is interest among the Chapters in having some kind of preview but no definite plans at this time.

2) Have dates for the other parties been set? Isn't there somewhat of a lag between ice water teas and other rounds?

School just resumed last week (January 22), and Panhellenic has only tentative dates at the moment. Due to the fact that Recruitment occurs during Football Season, the party schedule cannot be finalized prior to the setting of the Football Schedule. Still, the schedule should be available soon, however it may be subject to changes after the date it’s announced like the Fall 2012 schedule was when an additional day of Philanthropy Parties was announced.

Finally, welcome to Ole Miss! Hotty Toddy!

It will fall across a week ending in an away game or an open date. Last year bid day was the day of the Ole Miss v Tulane game in New Orleans, which led me to, "What were they [Panhellenic] thinking?" New Orleans is a treat.

No kidding. Based on that, it could potentially be the weekend of the Texas game. Please say it ain't so.....Austin will be big fun that weeknd. Fingers crossed for the next week.

Next question (and my thanks for the information so far)! My daughter has lined up 2 recs per house, but is fortunate to have additional ladies asking to help her. We have gotten the impression that more is not necessarily better in this case and that it becomes a burden on the chapters to get flooded with mail for each girl. I know this topic is debated a good bit on this site, but specifically to Ole Miss, what do you think?

Once my dd (not at Ole Miss) had the recs she needed, some of the ladies who offered to write my dd a rec wrote a letter of support instead (since they knew her well). At least a letter is less paper to shuffle for the membership chair than another rec with attached resume, photo, etc.

I don't know how well these are received at all campuses -- my understanding is that this can differ from campus/chapter to campus/chapter.

I've had a few moms in the past ask me to write a letter of support to my own chapter -- so I'd be interested in MaryPoppins' opinion on this.

The importance of Letters of Reference, Recommendations, et cetera, is twofold: 1) to check a box that the PNM has one; and 2) to let the chapter know about the PNM. The amount of PNM support a rec/ref provides is dependent on the quality of the rec/ref itself, and therefore dependent on the writer and the PNM. If it's bland or pro forma it will just fulfill that box check requirement.

The crux of the matter comes when the PNM seems attractive to the chapter and the chapter now wants to know more about her. If she is already known to the chapter then the pro forma rec/ref is fine. If she is not well known, or perhaps unknown, then a informational ref/rec is needed. The unknown/less well known PNM needs the additional boost to go beyond the chapters mere interest. Chapters use all information received to study the PNM, they use that information in recruitment to connect with her, and if she is a rush crush to promote her within the chapter.

It is old school to look at the number of ref/recs or letters of support when evaluating an PNM. I cannot speak to how old school any of the chapters here at Ole Miss are as that is clearly a membership selection area. Since recruitment gifts of food and flowers in support of a PNM are no longer permitted, the extra letters and rec/refs may now seem the only avenue available. I cannot know how additional letters and rec/refs would be received at the various chapters at Ole Miss, but I think that I would make certain that there was quality over quantity in any rec/ref, resume', or materials sent in on one of my daughters.

Since you have been fortunate enough to find all the help you need, if there are some who know your daughter more personally than others, I would use those. The others you might say thank you but you don't want to take their time, or whatever polite decline is appropriate. If you have 3 close women who are all part of the same sorority and they would be hurt to be denied the opportunity, then I wouldn't rescind the ask. But some women are asked to write a LOT of recs, so if you take one off their to-do list, they may be appreciative.
