Usually you incorporate your symbols/mottos. I don't know where you would go to have one made, one of our Founders drew ours for us.

Do you mean how to design one or how to have one made (out of wood or some other material)?

If you are talking about designing one, there are established rules of heraldry that are a very good guide, although many GLOs do not adhere to them very closely. The Wiki actually gives a fairly good overview of the basic rules here, but I would suggest looking at your local library or bookstore for a good book on heraldry.

Note that the tinctures (colors) shown on the Wiki page are the main tinctures used in heraldry, but there are others (some of which are commonly referred to as "stains") that can be used as well, such as celeste (sky blue), murray (a maroon color), sanguine (blood red) and tenné (orange or orange-brown).

If you snoop around the Web, I'm sure you can find someone willing to design one for you, although I'd think this is something you'd rather have someone in your org do.

And BTW, common usage to the contrary notwithstanding, the proper term is "coat of arms" or "armorial bearings" (or simply "arms"), not "crest." A crest is a component of a coat or arms.

Good luck!

My sorority had a crest drawn by a sister; and then just this year we got a professional design which changed the look considerably. I would suggest researching heraldry and the crests/coats-of-arms of other Greek organizations. From there you can begin to brainstorm...starting with the elements you would like to see in the design. From there, you can compile several sketches then have the group decide on a final design.

If you are looking for a more traditional look...you can go with a professional heraldic artist to create your crest. This is the route my organization took. There are companies like http://www.fleurdelis.com/, or heraldic associations like http://usheraldicregistry.com/, or individual designers like http://www.dksdesigns.net/ (who did our crest ).

Good luck getting your crest created.

I recently created our crest using mostly computer generated images...you definitely want to read up on heraldry so you know exactly what each thing on a coat of arms means. Just google it and you can find lots of info. When it comes to the actual creation, theres a great website that offers free heraldic clip art that you can use to create your own crest & arms - www.heraldicclipart.com Good luck!
